OK I'll just come right out and say it.
1. It lacked the standard cliché licks.
2. It didn't sound anywhere’s near a P/P.
3. It obviously was sadly lacking in use of pedals and levers. Most noticeably no Franklin Pedal.
4. Last but not least Not a steel guitar train whistle to be found in the whole dang song. What a travesty

I for one am a fan of Kaphan....have a listen to Thomas Dolby's new album....song is titled "17 Hills" with Bruce Kaphan and Mark knopfler playing....I thought it was probably Paul Franklin at first just because of his prior association with Mark but turns out it's Bruce....Mark Eaton wrote:I actually supply the name of the steel player for the piece of music around which the thread was started, and eight posts later, zero mention of this individual, though some did enjoy the playing itself. Apparently the musician himself is of no interest, and the thread receives replies about the steel playing of a guy who has been dead for 18 years this August because the style in the song might be somewhat reminiscent of the dead guy.
Bruce Kaphan is alive and well, and has quite the resume' - check out his discography:

Disclaimer: the following is not directed at anyone posting in this thread, but sometimes a "groundswell" of interest necessitates change.
Maybe this way Bruce Kaphan might get a little screen time here.
b0b, I really think "due to popular demand" and in the interest of organization that it's time to add some new topic categories to the Forum...the people have spoken!
Today's Country Music On Mainstream Radio Sucks
Robert Randolph: It's Not REAL Pedal Steel Playing
Jerry Garcia: It Ticks Me Off That People Think He Was Any Good On Pedal Steel
It's not always who can play the most notes in the shortest amount of time although that too is a skill that can be appreciated...

You can't compare Bruce Kaphan to Garcia
If you think Bruce Kaphan can't really play the steel and try to compare him to non-standard country styled players like Garcia....just have a listen to this....and then tell me he hasn't got any chops!
