That's a great idea. I would definitely go to a show like that.

i think it's a great idea! do it! it's not necessarily a new idea as many of us who have played thousands of bar gigs and other creative endeavors have dabbled in all types of music. but i think this is the right time to offer some shows that focus on this direction. young musicians and kids may not know about it at first, but if it is good, they will hear about it and come to the next one.
i think it would create lots of interest.
i'll be lying on the couch watching tv.

Been playing R & R on steel for years. Prefer old country but will jam on CCR, ZZTOP, METALLIC, don't matter. Good chance for speed pickin' usually and a good source for playing some off the normal pedal steel. All I use is a DD3 and a little reverb. I'm open to anything.

Great idea. We talked about something similar with B0b at the ISCG last year.
It wouldn`t hurt to add some contemporary thinking lap steel, weissenborn and resonator players.

Indeed, it would
help, quite a lot, I think.

I've always had this R&R streak in me that only comes out when I play bars and dance halls. Being musically flexable as a player, and a having a positive attitude toward non-country music styles has got me many jobs here in the mid-west. I would support your show effort.

If you want to attract young folks, don't advertise it as a steel show, advertise it as an 'Slide" show. Young people will relate more to hot electric or acoustic slide licks, and then you blow them away by introducing them to the ultimate slide machine, the pedal steel.
Bill it as an evening showing the history of slide guitar or something like that. Emphasis SLIDE GUITAR, not Pedal Steel guitar.

As much as I hate it when people refer to my pedal steel as a "slide guitar", I have to admit that Bill is right about this. Especially the younger folks will call it a 'slide guitar'. I had a professor once who advised me, "Jim, always remember that it's easier to ride a horse in the direction it's going."

It's a great idea, but not my "cup 'o tea".
I probably wouldn't attend if it coincided w/ the NFL, MLB, NHL, NASCAR or PGA seasons.

I know Mr. Hall means well, but when he says
i would love to see some other stuff that you dont normally see ,that has featured the pedal steel
like the grateful dead, jackson brown, elton john, flying burito brothers, commander coty, new riders of the purple sage......ect just to name a few and done instrumental!
Those are still 40-year-old bands!
Hmmm, the Red Sparowes, Daniel Lanois, Bruce Kaphan, Gary Brandin, Greg Leisz, Susan Alcorn, Dave Easley, it would be great to get Debashish Bhattacharya or Vishwa Mohan Bhatt...

I think it's more about attitude than age. My body might be old, but in my mind I'm still a young 'un.
You need people that embrace difference and change, age notwithstanding. Just because a player is young, doesn't necessarily mean they fit the profile of subscribing to steel guitar music outside the run-of-the-mill stuff.

Personally, I love 40 year old bands. But if a major objective is to attract a younger crowd, i.e., say, in their 20's and 30's, then it would be important to feature music from the most recent decade or two.
I think Mike Mantey is very shrewd in working on this. He obviously wants to see his business perpetuate into the long-term future and take it over when Del retires. Right now, he has a very aging market with little influx at the other end of the age spectrum. If anyone is gonna stoke the pipeline with potential new customers, it's gotta be someone like Mike. I commend you Mike for thinking long-term and working on this!!

I would love to go a new kind of steel show or any type of steel specific show for that matter... but do it on the west coast, such as San Francisco or Portland. St. Louis is far away and mostly too impracticle for me to attend.

I would look forward to this also.........as stated before.....depending when & where......

I think you guys are getting a little mixed up. You are thinking that music you liked when you where young is what young kids want. AC/DC, LEd Zeppelin, Skynard, etc. If we want to get the attention of young people to the steel guitar, I think the songs should be more current. My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Iron and Wine,Drive by Truckers etc. Still however it turned out it would be great to hear the steel guitar doing any kind of music that is out there.

we are not trying to reach just young people, that would be great if we can get young people interested, but rather
reach out to anyone from our generation or any other generation both young and old,who loves the steel guitar and its sound, and showcase the instrument and demonstrate that it is not just limited to country or Hawaiian music , but can be center stage
in any musical genre from led zeppelin to lady gaga,
from waylon to van halen, and everything in between, new and old....

We should do it in Oceanside and get Jim Palenscar involved.
