Warren Haynes plays slide in standard guitar tuning these days. I do this on lap but drop the A down to G for full major and minor chords. Also The high E (or both E's) tuned down to D is also nice (now a low bass open G tuning). Those guitarists you mentioned mute with fingertips so all technique converts to lap well.

Check out some 'sacred steelers' on youtube for some good bluesy steel (and you'll hear how Trucks was greatly influenced).

I should ad there are plenty of slide instructional clips on youtube in many tunings including standard guitar tuning. They can all convert to the lap. Plenty off Allmans etc. Haynes and Jack Pearson too. Have fun and good luck with it :-)
