"There hasn't been an event like this in northeast Louisiana," Jack Harper said.
He is the emcee and one of the singers in the Stars of Steel Guitar Exposition to be held this Saturdayat the historic Fiske Theatre in Oak Grove.
Steel guitarists from a six-state area will perform in 25-to-30-minute sessions from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.
"Most players don't want to play in honky tonks, so we're trying to give them a place to come together," Harper said. "We're drawing players from Kansas to the Gulf Coast."
The showcase and concert are part of an effort to form an Ark-La-Miss Steel Guitar Association in order to have a database, or official listing, of steel guitar players in the area.
"There are two or three of these steel guitar associations in Texas," Harper said, emphasizing the need for one in Louisiana.
The lineup of guitar players includes former school teacher Jack Matthews from Magnolia, Ark. Matthews recently won first runner-up for Steel Guitar Player of the Year in a Texas competition, Harper said.
Also signed on is professional steel guitar player Gary Miles, who just returned from a music tour in Hawaii. Miles' niche — unlike most steel-string players — is blues and jazz, an obvious specialty for the New Orleans native.
Also plucking away at the strings will be 10-year-old Austin Stewart, a young steel player who will be performing classics including "Faded Love" by Bob Wills.
Country-western fans should get to enjoy the entire Ray Price collection, including hits "A Way to Survive," "San Antonio Rose" and "I Don't Believe I'll Fall in Love Today."
Louis Neatherly, who is helping organize the day-long event, said there will be a steel guitar swap meet at the showcase in which players can buy and trade guitars.
"They'll enjoy professional country music at its best," Neatherly said.
The event will conclude with a Louisiana hayride-style show in the evening. Concessions will be provided.
