Laney sings so much like Patsy Cline it is'nt funny.
I think she sounds more like a "cross" between Tammy Wynette,& Wanda Jackson. Kind of a "Wanda Wynette". Image Image

The thing I can't figure out is how did something that looks and sounds as good as Laney wind up with Russ???
Laney is a sweetheart that always has time to talk and make you feel right at home wherever she and Russ maybe and Russ seems to know a thing or two about the steel...

See you both soon

When I hear Laney sing.....I'm reminded of female singers like,Minnie Pearl,...Skeeter Davis,....Sissy Spacek,... Bertha and the Butt Sisters,...and that Group called the AWOL Sisters, when they sang "Have I Stayed Away To Long", and of the Fact that Laney is in a class all by herself, in spite of that "local" steel player she has to work with!!LOL Lonnie P.

a million thanks and one "Smiley, you're in a heap of trouble!"...

Roger and Jerry: sounds like a plan and more fun than we deserve! (I'll speak to my "significant other")

Tony Dingus: nice try...but you know that I keep that cute orange cap on display out of respect for my UT fan friends; my blood, however, runs pure CRIMSON. Image

God bless you all real good,
Laney

Wow, you are all correct! A great singer with a lot of soul and chops and one great steel pickin' husband. I think the first time I heard Laney was when she was with(I believe) Monument Records. I recall she was being produced by Charlie McCoy. In fact, Russ or Laney, correct me if I'm wrong, was it Laney "Smallwood" back then? I'm not completely sure of that, but I do remember I was knocked out by her wonderful, soulful sound. and Russ, I think I first saw you when I was just a little kid and you played Liza Jane on the Kitty Wells T.V. show. remember that.

You guys are making me jealous. I've never got to hear Laney sing, but of all the music I have the song I seem to play the most is "Steelin" by Russ and Jim Crawford. It ain't the prettiest but it's my favorite.

I saw Russ and Laney in Grand Rapids last spring at LT. Zinn's HOF show. They are two great talents and I was highly impressed by them.

I talked to Russ before he went on and he is the nicest guy you would want to meet, and as everyone knows, a great steel player.

As for Laney, everyone agrees that her voice is just perfect. A tremenndous talent. She has her own sound and style, and reminds me of another great singer and great gal, Connie Smith.

I hope that LT is booking them again this year in Grand Rapids, where I can get to see them again...al Image Image

You started a terrific thread and as you can see by the response, Laney has many fans. Over the last few years, I have had the true pleasure to work with Russ and Laney many times. What an honor it was to play on her "Matters of the Heart" CD. They have become two of my closest friends but I remain a huge fan. (this is serious, no fat jokes)

Roger, I wouldn't miss that weekend in Ga for anything. Country music, good friends and golf. Don't forget, you promised fried chicken too. I'll see you, Larry, Jerry and others next week.

Thanks again Jim for starting a great thread. Russ is one of my all-time favorites and if there is a better country singer out there than Laney, I sure haven't heard"em( and she can cook too).

Yep, what a great thread.
I have had the honor of Laney singing on my set at several shows over the past couple of years.

I thought that if I ever got a chance to pick on the Opry, that would be the ultimate, BUT, no more.
This is the ultimate:

Bill,

You forgot to add that I was sitting behind her with a flat-top guitar and singing a duet with her at the time. You just happen to be taking a steel break when this picture was taken. But you know I like your playing. I will also add that you do let me sing on your shows sometimes. Thanks again.

Well, What can I say that everyone else hasn't already said. She should be called America's Sweetheart. Everyone loves her if she couldn't sing a lick. My daughter saw her up in Va. Over the weekend and the first thing she said to me was, Laney is the sweetest thing There just couldn't be anyone that sings as true and with as much soul as Laney.Everyone loves Laney and Russ Garland Nash
