Yes, that sounds very familiar... I teach slants to my lap steel students by the 3rd or 4th lesson... and guess what? the students Love the slants! When they see and hear how slants sound they want to do that... and if I show them an alternate way to play the part (without a slant) they almost always choose to play the slant position instead of the straight bar position. Of course, there are many situations where it's easier to play 'straight bar' on another fret, but if a slant is reasonably easy to play the students will opt for the slant.
