As a drummer lucky enough to work with many of the great players at various shows, I'm looking at this from a "most fun to work with" angle. I enjoy all the players' sets, but I really get a kick out of working with Hicks, Johnson and Jernigan...... and what I'd give to work another set with Hughey.

That being said, I could make a very, very long list of favorite players, past and present.

Completely subjectively, I go for uniqueness over ripping virtuosity, but there's something about those who can play Charlie Parker 'at velocity' on a steel that knocks me out. So, a lot of pickers tied for second.

I would add Bobby Black's name to the list of the many excellent steel guitarists who have been listed here. His work with Commander Cody, Lost Weekend, and the Saddle Cats is just superb.

I have many favorites--there are many great and amazing steel guitar players......
and then there is Buddy Emmons.

To my mind, there is no one who can come close to the breadth of Buddy's playing--country, jazz, Western Swing, folk, etc.-- or the depth of his musicality and creativity.

Buddy always seems to play exactly the right notes to fit the song or tune he is playing, and he delivers those notes in a way that will tear at your heart-strings or make you laugh out loud at his musical audacity.

Buddy is the player who nearly everyone else who has been listed above would stop whatever they are doing to listen to. He is a musical genius.

From Ernest Tubb and Ray Price to Judy Collins and the Everly Brothers, and so many others, Buddy has left his indelible stamp on a musical legacy that is immortal.

I've heard almost everybody but I don't think anybody compares to Joe Wright. His playing is superlative, not even considering his value as an entertainer.
