A little over 3 weeks and counting. Harley and I will be calling everyone on our combined phone lists as well soon. Tell others you know also so no one gets left out.

I have a few questions about some of the charts that hopefully can be answered. I want to play the changes that will be used for the jam, so I'm checking some of the tunes that seem "different" :)

Here's what the posted charts shows:

[18] Window Faces the South A

v:
1 1 1 1
1 1 1 17
[4/4#dim 1/6 2 5] 1st end
[4/4#dim 1/6 2/5 1] 2nd end

ch:
4 4 4 4
1 1 1 17
4 4 4 4
2 2 5 5

repeat verse w/ 2nd ending

And this is how I play it with my swing band which matches (close enough!) all the versions I can find including v.5 of the Bob Wills Tiffany Transcriptions:

1 1 1 1
1 1 17 17
4 #4o7 1 67

1st ending:
27 27 57 57

2nd ending
27 57 17 17

Is there a problem with the posted chart or is it indicative of a "common version"? If so could someone could point out a source for me?

I'll post more questions as they come up :)

Thanks!

Another one:

[3] Touch My Heart

v:
1 17 4 4
5 5 5/1 5
1 17 4 4
5 5 1 1

ch:
1 5 4 1
4 5 1 5
1 5 4 1
4 5 1 5

I listened to the 1966 version by Ray Price and came up with this instead:

v:
1 17 4 4
5 5 4/1 1
1 17 4 4
5 5 4 1

ch:
1 5 4 1
4 5 1 1
1 5 4 1
4 5 1 1

Twayn, these charts are not in stone, the bass player may also play them similar to what you are use to, or not.

Hover over the 1 with pedals at the ready. :D :D :D

I had to play a job last night where I was expected to take a brake on every song and had not heard them before. I had a chord chart but still it was a little over whelming.

Have fun, turn up and pick your a.... off.

Thanks Larry! No pedals on my new 8-string lap steel, but I definitely hear ya!

I'm used to reading chords charts on the fly at the weekly Gypsy Jazz jam and we all use a common source (the Robin Nolan Gig Book.) If someone wants to play a tune that's not in the Gig book they usually bring enough charts for everyone to read off of. I guess I was wanting to know if the changes in the posted charts were indicative of the common way to play the tunes OR if there were typos in the charts :) Not being a country player I'm really not familiar with a lot of these tunes, and some I haven't heard since I was a kid! (or more accurately, since the last steel jam  ) Country tunes don't move the changes around like swing tunes do, so a lot of my automatic reflexes will need to be "restrained".

I definitely greatly appreciate the posting of these charts and I'll keep in mind for the jam that they are a general guide only instead of THE changes.

For anyone who has iRealBook on their iPhone/iPod/iPad, I've put all the tunes in and made a set list, so if you want 'em let me know and I'll email you the set list.

Hey Guys, (and gals, too)... I'll be there with lots of Paloma Tone Bars for y'all to try and buy if you have such a hankerin'. And like the jam at Bushwackers last time, I'll have some new items for players to test and preview.

Twayn, fwiw, I've never heard a Window Faces The South that has a section starting on a IV, either.
Looks like I am out for this date. Gotta work.

Hi Larry;
Thanks for the phone call reminder. I hope to be there. I'm starting to play more pedal steel on Sunday mornings at Summit View.

Sorry for the tab misfires. I was thinking of "New Road Under My Wheels" when I should'a been thinking "Window Faces The South".

No need to worry though, as I officially retire from the steel jam charting job.

Well, I plan to be in lovely Colorado Springs, Colorado, making empty cardboard boxes full on the day of the big event. Everybody play an extra chorus of "Window" for me, and I will definitely see you next time.

Heck, if I had a nickel for every typo, mistake or wrong chord I've put in chart I'd own a lot more guitars that I do

Thank you for doing this set, I've found the charts to be extremely handy. Are you passing the job on to someone else?

Two weeks and counting. We may be missing some of the "old timers" but there will be several first time players this time. Since we are all about the brotherhood and paying if forward this will be another great opportunity to welcome "newbies" into the fold.

Hey, I just found out about this! Wonderful!

I'm a newbie and need some hand-holding - are there any lap steel teachers out there in PDX (I'm in inner SE)?

I've played guitar for decades, slide guitar for 5 years, and now moving to lap steel....I play in a couple of bands here now...

I need some help letting go of the guitar thing and making my hands do the lap thing...I know the theory, can fingerpick, etc., but need an old hand to show me the "way"....

Steve contact Twayn above, he will be at the jam.

Ok to bring "For Sale" items, or not?

by Ralph Sebers
If it would be ok, I wouldn't mind bringing a few items for sale. I'm trying to downsize the ole music room. I have a couple of volume pedals, a couple of rack systems, and a couple of custom speaker cabinets loaded with15" JBL D130F's. If anyone is interested, you could see them at the jam, or, let me know, and I can try to send you a picture before hand.

I really look forward to the jam, and plan to bring a friend that has recently become interested in learning to play the pedal steel. I know he'll enjoy the neat people, and the great music.

Thanks,
Ralph (Dallas, OR)

I'm sorry I'm going to miss it. Had a ball last year. There are a few Seattle area guys coming down I believe. Hopefully next time...
