Out of those five that Clete listed, only Townsend and Holdsworth didn't play slide guitar, at least recording with it. Pedal steel is sort of the next logical step after you realize that lap steel isn't going to give you intervals that just aren't there without changing some strings. Steve Howe and David Gilmour played a fair amount of lapsteel on stage and records. I read a pretty funny story about Steve Howe traveling on Yes tours, carrying a Sho-bud into his hotel rooms and setting it up every night to try to teach himself pedal steel. It didn't seem to take....

Great guitar player Mick Abrahams of Bloodwin Pig, also played steel on some of their songs.
