Norman Markowitz wrote: You really do take on a sense of needing to make sure the music gets passed on so it can be heard. So it will still live on and become known by as many people as possible. The music will always live on.

You have certainly done more than most, in seeing that this is a reality.
Well on that same theme Norman, there are 3 "Special" students of mine who are enthusiastic about continuing the Hawaiian Pedal style that I play.
I must put up my hands and admit that the influences on me were the GREATS like Jules ah See, Billy Hew Len, Danny Stewart and Barney Isaacs (Alvin Kalanikau Isaacs Jr.)
I heard what they were doing in the studios in the 50's and 60's and developed my own copedent to emulate their style.

Three players over here in Europe that are fans of my style, have taken on studying the way I play and to that end they've actually purchased Fender 1000 pedal steels and adopted my copedent.

At this point in the post, If it was on an Hawaiian Steel web site, I would have to say:-
"I'm humbled by their actions"
But I don't subscribe to the CRAP of feigning humility, that seems to be a requirement to acceptance.
I'm NOT humbled, I'm NOT a humble person with a lot to be humble about (like some). I'm VERY proud of my fledglings, just like a mother hen..

My Star pupil is Steel/Bass player Joerg Schubert of the "Free Bears"

Please let me know about the steel player(S) on the Hawaiian Music 100
The a rough translation of the words under the disc numbers are as follows.

1 Hula songs
2 Hawaiian mood
3 Sound of Steel Guitar (Tracks played by 1-10 Boss Miyazaki & Coney Islanders, 11-20 Setsuo Oohashi & Honey Islanders)
4 Style of slack key guitar (Hawaiian slack key playes such as Ray Kane, Keora Beemer Ledward Ka'apana)
5 Popular style of Hawaii and sun and beach (Elvis Presley, Perry Como etc.)

I hope that helps Basil.

PS. No I don't speak/read Japanese but I know a uke playing girl who does.

I found it amusing that you used the term "Lap Steel" in the title of this post, Baz!

Thanks for your generosity on making these tracks available.

Thanks so much. I see that the Ry Cooder files are no longer available. Will you be reposting those at some point? I've always marveled at his playing style. A BIG THANKS to you sir!!!

Thanks Bill, it's always been a lap steel this side of the pond, the terminology "Console" and "non pedal" hasn't breached the divide yet.
Even to the extent that players like Roland Peachy, Sammy Mitchel and Harry Brooker who all played multi necked instruments, were known as lap steel players, or sometimes just Hawaiian Guitarists.

Steven, the "Waikiki is Good Enough" and "Rhythm of the Waves" collections contain material that's no longer commercially available, so I feel comfortable giving them away, The Ry Cooder and other files are being researched by myself to ascertain if the content is also now defunct and unavailable, if that's the case, I WILL be making them available gratis, soon.

Aloha Basil,
Any chance on you posting the legendary "Tapa Room Tapes", if you have them. I've heard references to them on and off over the years.

Not only do I want to thank Basil for his thoughtfulness and tremendous effort so all of us can enjoy this historical music, I suggest that all the files Basil has provided are worth a ton more than the cost of a subscription to his wonderful Aloha Dream magazine. So, lets get out of our easy chairs and reciprocate. Here is the subscription link:

I very much agree and put in my subscription request a few days ago. I'm very much looking forward to my first issue, even though I don't play a note. I'm just a fan of the steel guitar. The efforts of people like Basil need to be supported.

In a recent thread about David Keli'i there was yet again another mention of those "legendary Tapa Room Tapes" with Jules Ah See supporting Alfred Apaka. Any luck in locating them, Basil? For me, the hunt continues.

I have them and will convert and categorise them anon.. It's just that the next few days are somewhat traumatic and filled with a plethora of projects for me to conclude.

Sorry for the not so gentle nudge on my part, Basil. Beggars.....and all that. It's just that I've heard about them for so long and have made inquires to others, to no avail. So when I saw your response to my post above, I started foaming at the mouth. (So to speak.)
I shall wait patiently, albeit expectantly.
