OK, so now I'm intrigued by the thought of taking up yet another instrument to get frustrated with. Any recommendations on a "just above student level" banjo that would be good to learn on, but one you'd wouldn't outgrow too quickly? Deering Goodtime 2, Goldtone? thanks, mp

To my tastes, I think Gold Tone makes the best new banjo for the buck. If you want something that plays well, won't drive everybody crazy while learning PLUS be able to be used in a band (since it's electric), try an EBT or EBM. I have an EBM, and it's just fine - I think it sounds better plugged in than the Deering Crossfire, one of which I had and sold. They both play fine, don't create such a big firestorm in the household when practicing, and can be played in a pretty loud band without alteration.
