I generally wear cowboy boots but I can play equally as well (or bad) with any type of shoe.

With an ankle problem maybe a boot would give it more support. The zippered side "half" boots are something to consider. I've got a pair of those that I bought on sale at Shepler's Western Wear and they work good too.

I used to wear cowboy boots when I played but when I moved to Florida 16 years ago I started to play in my everyday Dexter boat shoes.
The are soft as a moccasin but with a soft sole.

Actually I used to not be able to feel the pedals, so less was more. I've now gotten used to, and love playing in cowboy boots. It's all in the heel!!

When Johnnie Bush was backing up Dickie Overby at the recent St L Convention, Dickie took both shoes off and played in his socks.
Don't know if that's normal for Dickie, but seeing was believing.

I like my moccasins but they cost a fortune and this is now the second time I didn't get them packed and left them at the gig and of course they disappeared.
So I just pull my regular shoes off and expose my hospital socks which work just fine. At $14 for 3 pair I love em.

Mike don't do it the hard way and check into the hospital.
I got mine direct from the hospital (I no long can do that) but there are a lot of places online where you can buy these socks. The medical ankle slippers are even better.

I can only wear good fitting rounded toe dress shoes or a old round style cowboy boot I have had for years. Can'g mash pedals with soft shoes or pointed toes...that's just me.

I'm with Mike Perlowin -- I have worn soft-soled moccasins since '72. I had some great old high-quality cowboy boots but mocs always worked better.

Mike -- you can still get soft-soled mocs from some Native Americans who have a store in Pownal, VT called Mohican Moccasins. They might be on the web; let me know if they are not. My latest pair (the first pair lasted 35 years!) cost maybe $50...

Well, it looks like this thread is dead, but I'll put in my question- I am a new steel player, and I am thinking about getting some of the ninja shoes with the rubber sole- they separate your big toe and the rest, which looks pretty good to me...any experience?
Also, what else do y'all do to support your heel? physically, that is what is most challenging to me right now with the steel...

My heel is always on the floor, except when I'm using a vertical lever. For playing, I find that anything that's comfortable to walk in is comfortable to play in.

Welcome, newbie!
Every type of footwear feels different, and accommodating the different types is distracting to a newbie.
Choose one type of footwear and use it exclusively for your first year.
It doesn't matter what type.
My favorites have medium heels, like dress shoes, Hush Puppies, or low cowboy boots.

Funny, I used to wear Ropers and they worked fine. The other day I had some time to play but thought I looked goofy wearing Ropers with shorts and grabbed a pair of boat shoes. Very comfortable, and I've played in them every day since.

I buy rubber soled Kung Fu shoes off Amazon, they feel great and are cheap.
