the frets are painted on (markers). It is for steel playing only.
The nut and bridge are so thin and cruddy that you, with your skills and penchants, would change them out in a heartbeat anyway. It's otherwise a good and very fun instrument (dirt cheap, too). I love the "blend" aspect of the tone knob.
