I've moved from the POD 2.0 to POD XT to POD X3 to POD X3 Pro and have used the devices with satisfying results in both studio and live performance situations. The technology is a powerful tool, or better yet, toolkit. IMO the presets, just like on synths, are really for demonstration purposes, not practical use. To get the most out of the device, whether for effects only or for amp, cab, mic, and room sims + effects, dig into the device. I encourage folks to start simple and build a signal chain just like you would with physical effects in the analog world. And just like in the physical analog world, you don't have to use it all! Turn everything off, add back what you need, and keep it simple.

As always, YMMV, but works for me and what I do.
