Waylon Jennings also recorded Farewell Party. I heard Gene say on an interview not long ago, that the Waylon cut was where he first discovered the song. Waylon’s version had dobro on it, but no steel guitar.

When I was active- pre Covid, Farewell became a favorite closing song at our 2x mth show, I feel I played it well, but I grabbed phrases from whoever, wherever. I recall one time a Steel'er in the room asked me, was that Lloyds version or Mikes (MJ) version ? I just said "YES".
We should be grateful that we have multiple INTERPERATIONS to aspire to. A little this, a little that and off we go !

I have heard Lloyd tell the story more than one time. That is why those studio musicians are in Nashville, they are good at what they do. That being said when Farewell Party comes on my radio the volume knob gets turned up to a higher level.

Does anyone know who played steel on Alan Jackson’s version. Very good also.
