So Ernie, it seems to me that that the big news is in your post isn't that Hank didn't write "Mind Your Own Business". It's that Fred Rose apparently stole the first line of "Rootie Tootie" from the song that Hank bought fair and square.

It's hard to know what deals go down in the offices of music publishing houses. Often I see a big star's name among the songwriter credits and wonder how it got there. Maybe the singer added a word or changed a line just to get the credit (and the resulting mailbox monies).

At any rate, Smokey Metcalf was not treated fairly. He sold one song for $25. If that was the going rate, he should have received another $25 for "Rootie Tootie"!

P.S. - Don't stop posting these first-hand stories. I love them!

As far as "Lovesick Blues" goes, I've heard Emmett Miller had a huge influence on Hank, stylistically.

Hearsay, as well, but I was under the impression Roy Acuff and Fred Rose both were good at finding songs whose copyrights had expired and claiming ownership or writer credit.

Dammit people, how am I gonna sleep knowing Hank Williams didn't write every song he recorded. I'm sure a bottle of Budwieser bought more than one song.

I just thought it would be interesting to know who wrote the song. I met a man at the florida club jam Wen, that said he also knew about this song, I did not ask him how he knew. I did not have to, because I was there when the money changed hands, Don Lynch from Montgomery also knows for sure, there are 2 otherwittnesses.

ernie

put it to rest

I don't think anyone is disputing your story, Ernie. I certainly am not! You were there and saw it go down. Can't argue with that!
