The Fessenden website says that the Six-Shooter is “aimed at the guitarist or musician looking for an easy and inexpensive transition to pedal steel guitar.” That describes me.

I just bought a brand new red one from Gary Sill of Sill Music Supply in Mt. Zion, IL. This guitar was built one-at-a-time in the same small production shop by the guy who built Robert Randolph’s guitar. How cool is that?!! I think that gives this guitar all the cachet and appeal of a Gibson or Fender Custom Shop instrument, but at a fraction of the price!

My Six-Shooter sounds great, and it’s a lot of fun. Within five minutes after setting it up, I was playing 6-string chords with a flatpick and I could play every major, minor, or sus4 chord in any key. If you can play rhythm guitar and you understand the concept of barre chords, you’ll be able to play chords on the Six-Shooter right out of the box. Fingerpicking and blocking and playing lead lines are going to be another story for me, but I'm determined to keep practicing so that I can eventually master that. I think that it’s going to be less frustrating learning pedal steel blocking with only 6 strings.

Others have suggested that the Six Shooter has severe limitations and that I’ll outgrow it quickly. That may be true, but I look forward to the day when I’ve mastered fingerpicking and blocking enough that I’m ready for a more advanced pedal steel.

My thanks to Jerry Fessenden for building my guitar, and to Gary Sill for lining it up for me.
