Joe is a great player and played beautifully on this version of the Gill "classic". This was an early Vice Gill tour and band, obviously with less players on stage at this juncture, Joe filled the "sonic holes" beautifully with his warm, rich tone "pads". and impeccable intonation without "getting in the way" of Vince's vocals. I'll never forget listening to Joe's playing with Dolly Parton, when while with Dave and Sugar, we opened for her. His tone and execution were always "right on". The triplet figures he played on her live versions of"Here you come again" were awesomely executed.

Sorry, but I had to bump this old thread... the steel playing in this Vince Gill classic is wonderful to say the least.
Also, as pointed out in this thread, the song "look at us" had not been recorded yet so this "set in" steel player didnt have papa johns rendition to build on, and go from there.. he did it from scratch.. and WOW.
Thats what separates us hobbyist from the pro's...
Also, a quick note about the fact that he is playing alot - this was taken from a camcorder and apparently, the steel amp must have been pointed right at the person holding it.
I would bet that the FOH sound was mixed a little more in the Vocalist favor... UNTIL the solo time.. at least I would hope that the FOH engineer would take care of that.

It occurred to me that all that was wrong was the mix, with the steel being just a touch too loud for perfection. As Don points out, this was probably a camcorder which would possibly account for the imbalance.
I listened to the clip before I read the comments - I was simply wondering who the outstanding steel guitarist was, and I never felt that he 'overplayed'.
Wonderful musicianship!
