Maybe It Was Memphis

Dave, you are correct about there being some confusion as to who played on the Pam Tillis song Maybe It Was Memphis. The answer is BOTH of us...lol. The original cd version had a guitar solo by Jon Jorgenson and had Bruce Bouton on steel. However, the song exceeded 4 minutes in length and was a bit too long for radio at the time. We then went back in the studio and cut a radio version with a steel solo and some other edits. To make it simple, if the solo features lead guitar then its Bruce. If it's the radio version with the steel solo then it's the one I played on. One other confusing thing on that cd was the song "Cleopatra....Queen of Denial." It states Sonny Garrish played pedal steel and lap steel, but in fact it had no pedal steel on the track and I actually recorded the lap steel track with a vintage 1938 Gibson EH-100 through a 50-watt Marshall half-stack. I think they had originally tried pedal steel on it and decided to rock it up a bit more with the lap steel. It was a big hit and I was pretty disappointed at not getting the credit for playing on it.......

Thanks for clearing that up Gary. I loved both versions of "Maybe" and used to get in an argument with the guitar player in a band I was in every time the subject of the solo came up. He had never heard the longer steel solo and swore they never did it that way. Hah!
Stupid liner notes :?
