I believe in the video I go over right hand grips and individual note picking earlier in the lesson which is not in the sample. When I play the scale up to speed I do alternate my thumb and finger, but when I play it slowly I am just using my thumb...the idea being to concentrate on what strings and pedals you should use.

I didn't want to use the 12 string and did take the two lowest strings off. Unfortunately it was all I had. I explain this early on in the video when I go through tuning. I have since gotten a new Derby SD-10 and hopefully that will clear up any confusion.
