Emmons is very popular in Australia, eh blokes.
I think i read an artical on MSA once selling more steels in Europe than anywhere else including the USA.
I'll bet the Emmons company kept very busy on worldwide sales.
I know in England about 30 years ago, it was bassically an Emmons, or Sho-bud, i think The sho having more sales, a bit like a ford escort, it was availible and nobody really cared so much, it was a steel guitar.
Good show lads, enjoyed the thread, I plan to see your beautiful country in the near future.
Take care now! :)

G'day fellas, just discovered this thread, thought I'd say hello. I haven't been around for a while, and normally hang out with the Steel Without Pedals gang....
I play a DeGruchy squareneck reso and an old Fender Deluxe 8 non pedal steel. I love my non-pedal, though I am in awe of what the rest of you can do with your pedals and levers. I have been getting right into slants and behind the bar pulls to achieve a little of that early pedal steel flavour, a la Billy Robinson, though the full chord voicings of the E9 still elude me...Still, I am hooked.

All the best, and hope to see some of you at Tamworth next year.
Dean

No mate! I LOVE the slants! Even the forward to reverse combinations! Arrgghh!!! They are well worth the practise, and i've seen them used by great pedal steel players too.

Happy picking.

Hey Mates, How many of you have been around long enough to remember Pete Linden?
I spoke with Warren in St. Louis and he told me that Pete had been killed in a plane crash.
I knew him in San Diego, when he was in the US Navy and Playing steel. Just getting a good start. Would love to hear some stories of my old friend if you knew him.

I didn't know Pete Linden that well but he did replace me in a band "Billy Jack" in the 80's . He later played for Tom Fossel in the Moonee Valley Drifters .I think he played an LDG but also had a p/p D10 . His great love musically was the "west coast sound" on pedal steel . I believe he left a wife , don't know about children .

Ray, Pete used to come by the Kentucky Stud just before being discharged from the Navy. He had a MSA D-10 and had me switch the necks ala Curley Chauker. He had married a lady from Australia and was moving down under. I expected great things from him because he had a burning desire and a love of Pedal Steel Guitar. I was sorry to hear about the tragic end to his life.

P S I love your CD. I listen to it often.

What about great Lucky Oceans from Perth in WA...
First time I saw him play in Sydney in the 90's I couldn't believe that steel could be played like that...It was unbelievable to listen and to watch him in action! Great singer and accordian player too! He is working for ABC now I think...
Never the less, Lucky if you read this, we need more of you, please !!!!!!
Cheers

I have been a member of the Steel Guitar fraternity since the early 80's as a touring and session player.

I have been very lucky to have worked out of Nashville also since the early 90's
For details: http://www.nashvillemusicpros.com/profile/WayneAppleby

Two of my late buddies Jimmie Crawford and John Hughey got me into the forum and at last I have become part of the Forum brotherhood.
We have some very fine players in Australia and at present we are putting together a CD of the Histroy of Australian Steel Guitarist vol 1 (with some of our Australian legend) due out early next 2009, we hope to release vol. 2 & 3 as we move forward.
Thank you all for the opportunity to find the pedal steel guitar and changing my life.

Howdy, gang,

I play a Sho-Bud Pro II Custom through a Peavey Nashville 112. Wayne, you are my Aussie Mentor!!! I just hope that I'm half the player you are when I'm twice your age! Now, all you Zum players need to get your stuff together and get yourselves a Sho-Bud!!! Seriously, though, my newly adopted country here has some fantastic players, and every single one of them that I've met (and that includes heaps of them) are not only fantastic players, but all around wonderful people as well. I had the honour (see? I'm even learning to spell in Australian!!!) this past June to be invited up to Brisbane to play in the Brisbane Steel Guitar Club's Annual Festival, and lemme tell ya, folks, I had a blast!!! I met some absolutely terrific folks. The Kiwi Krew, made up of Paddy Long and Ivan Posa, were a highlight of that show, and their wonderful playing got everyone's attention. The Aussies that were there are also great players...Mike Tyne, Warren Neilsen, Ian Kerr, the great Ken Kitching, dobro virtuoso Gary Brown, and Ray Hasler...it was an absolute thrill for me to get to share a stage with these talented, wonderful gentlemen. I even was able to get Wayne up onstage and helped me do a couple of songs...MANY THANKS, Wayne!! So, all in all, the steel guitar is very much alive and well in the Land Down Under!!! There are many world class steelers down here, folks, and that list is long and distinguished. I'm proud to be associated with every one of these people! Mike Kirkley, Sydney

Hi all,... Malcolm Wood, another Aussie, from the New South Wales Central Coast. I've been teaching myself steel, for the past two years, on a beautiful old, maple bodied, 1976 MSA S-10, and it's sure not as easy to learn as I thought it would be. Two years of pleasure and pain, and sometimes, I still feel like an absolute beginner. Playing guitar for thirty years has helped make some of it a little easier for me, but I've almost accepted now, that I'll be working at it for a long long time yet, before I start thinking of myself as a steel player.

I met a real steel player, Michel Rose, after one of his gigs a little while ago, and, nice guy that he is, he let me try out his Zum. It was like getting behind the wheel of a Rolls Royce! Tone Tone Tone ... all the way up the neck! Disaster struck quickly though, when the bar slipped out of my fingers and shot off, in slow motion, over the front of the guitar. It then tumbled end over end through the air, and crashed to the floor,.... all while Michel was watching!
Though I was a touch embarrassed about dropping the bar, I quickly regained my composure, scrambled around to the front of the guitar and dug the bar out of its resting place under a monitor. Quick as a flash, I jumped back onto his seat, and started to slip on his finger picks. That's when Michel gave me my first ever steel lesson ...
Don't ever use someone elses picks!!! ... Thanks for that brief bit of instruction Michel, I'll never forget it, and I hope the bar is OK. If it's not, I owe you a new one!
Hi to Mike Kirkley. I haven't heard from you in a while mate. I though they might have sent you back to the states.
Hi too, to Chuck Becker, from Riverside CA. He sold me his MSA, and has become a great friend, and my mentor, in all things steel.

A very Merry Christmas to all. Malcolm Wood, NSW.
