I play jazz gigs with an archtop ('63 Gibson L-7CE with a factory installed Charlie Christian pickup) and a prewar bakelite Rickenbacker. I use a Polytone Mega brain with a Raezors Edge T8 cabinet. I am so completely satisfied with my tone that all I think about these days is playing the right notes !!! The Raezors Edge cabinet is so directional that you never have to worry about feedback with your big archtop. The Polytone head has a very tube like warmth that sounds great with single coil pickups like horseshoes or CC's. I've got a Vibrosonic for pedal steel, an old Deluxe Reverb for Tele twang, but for jazz, I grab the Polytone every time.

I think lap steel sounds great through a Fender Deluxe Reverb. I'm pretty lazy, so here's the lazy guys solution using a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
I would have my lap steel in a case nearby which would be easily accessible. I would have a guitar stand for my guitar. When I needed to switch from guitar to steel, I would flip the standby switch on the back of the amp and unplug my guitar. Then I would put the guitar on the stand, take the steel out of its case, plug it in using my guitar cord and flip the standby switch back on.
My big "effect" for steel is usually reverb. But if you have to have "whatever" special effect, you should be able to have a preset ready in your guitar rig that would work for steel.
