Old (even most new) stereo gear is hazardous-waste roundup fodder, just like dead VCR's, broken DVD players, etc. They're mostly made nowadays to be disposable, not repaired.
That's the way CRT TV's have been for years. Any picture tube TV made in the last 15 years ago (except the big 40" monsters) were not worth repairing...just go buy another one for $125.00.
I wonder what the situation will be with LCD TV's, though...prices have dropped, but they're still expensive enough it seems repairs would be worth it.
