Ms Lana called me last night with this very sad news.
Hard to to believe. A terrible loss for all of us in our steel guitar world to loose this kind and loving man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jean and all in their family. God's band is really HEAVENLY now!
And the very bright light on John's band stands will never fade. He has enriched us all. Go with God John.

I'm unable to express my feelings at this tragic loss to us all.

He was a gentle and self-effacing genius with a word of encouragement for everyone.

Susie and I send our deepest sympathies to Jean and the family.

Well I found out last night but was too shaken to write anything here till this morning.
I simply loved John Hughey, and always will.
From the first time I heard him, then met John on the road at Conway's house back in the 70's in Ok. city, he instantly became my ALL TIME HERO!!!
John had such an influence on my playing style as a young player, I will miss his big smile every time we would first see each other at a show somewhere.
Knowing John is with our Lord and savior gives me peace and understanding of it all. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I am stunned! As the rest, I thought he was doing well after that procedure. He was one of the greatest steel guitar heroes of all time. Our heroes are getting older and we should not put off going and seeing them perform at steel shows.

My condolences to Jean and the entire family.

My sincere condolences to Jean, the Hughey familiy and to the many close friends of John here on The Forum.

When John "retired" and began playing the shows he raised the bar for everyone. The first CD he put out showed everyone that these special interst projects could be done with every bit of the professonalism that the more commercial CDs are done with.

I spent several hours Saturday night working on his "Pure E9th" tab and tracks. Thanks for a lifetime of great works behind that pedal steel, John.

God bless the Hughey's.

Such sad news to await me this morning. I am thankful to have had the blessing to meet and converse with John twice. I ditto the other steelers in that he was truly a wonderful gentleman as well as one of the greatest pedal steelers in our history. I know we will all miss him greatly. But on a lighter note, he finally made it to Buelah Land. PTL. Our deepest condolences go to Jean and the family. May our God draw near to you at this vital time in your lives.

John was the first really professional steel player I seen playing in person as I was a teen more than 50 years ago playing with Slim Rhodes Show at Mammoth Spring Soldiers Reunion. Couldn't believe anyone could be that good--and only got better. As George sings "Who is going to fill his shoes". Truly a "Giant" player and a Gentleman Gone but not forgotten.
