LOL Just the title of this thread made me laugh out loud, I've always found it irritating when people clap on the 1 & 3 or just completely off time.
I vote ignore it though, and keep playing. Stopping and instructing people how to clap is just ridiculous, IMHO. You're there for them, not the other way around, so just let them enjoy themselves and do whatever your music makes them feel like doing.
Unless it makes them want to throw stuff.

For me, the audience clapping does not bother me - my classical training as a youngster taught me to 'feel' the beat, not hear it.
