Getting closer folks!
And if you have never heard flugelhorns, trombones, clarinets, saxaphones, musical saw at a steel guitar show before you will not be able to say that after this one. The Mississippi Coast Jazz Society will sit in those chairs on stage with Hank Corwin leading the band for some really big band music and a few deep south Dixie-Land tunes to boot.
I will have the shedule here this weekend.
So proud of all this support.
We will start our music at 11:00 AM and go until we can't..lol

Speaking Of :

Post by Ben ODell »

Speaking of: TOOTING OF THE HORNS.............

The Jazz Society will SHO-NUFF be tooting their's on the 30th. These guys are really a sight to see perform. Big band is still alive folks and we are really excited for ya'll to witness this. Hank Corwin wil be wiggling that little stick in front of them, (ain't never figured that out).

I am still gathering all the info on Tony Lane. The list goes on and on but meantime:

Tony worked for the great "GEORGE MORGAN". Toured with George, and played the OPRY. Tony was instrumental in introducing Lloyd Green to the steel guitar. And is still there for the new comers.

I recently attended Tony's birthday party. Tony was celebrating his XXth birthday and his family,
(wonderful crew), and friends really put on the ritz for my long time friend, including a performance by Tony. As usual, Tony knocked their socks off.

Let's see now. my memory is kinda short, and it must have been in 1968, I had the extreme honor of having Tony as a member of my band. That's where the big GRETCH came in. For a while, Tony played steel and lead guitar for us. Lay that bar down and grab that guitar neck.............WHAT A GREAT PLAYER !!!!!

At one of our Mobile shows, Tony and Doug Jernigan had the opportunity to be-dazzle the crowd during their part of the show, by swapping licks. And SWAP they did.

I guess Doug would be a good source of info on Tony, since they've been swapping those licks now for quite some time. Doug if you read this post, give us your input on Mr. R.L.

As we get closer, the excitement is building in anticipation of one of the best show the coast has ever seen. YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO MISS ALL THIS !!!!

Looking forward to that schedule Billy. I know it's gonna be a GOOD-UN !!!!

June 30th

Post by Roland Buras »

Good morning everyone, I have really been busy since Hurricane Katrina. However i still get to relax and play some steel on the weekends. I am playing with a 14 year old band that is very successful. The New Gospel travlers. the group recently bought Sammy Kershaws tour bus '' what a beauty. During the shows we play i get to announce and invite steel players and musicians as well as fans of the steel guitar to our show june 30th. Last night i played at the reimers auditiorium in Hammond La. There i seen Mr Charlie Bass and Jack woods which have attended some of the DSSG shows on the coast. They immediatly recognized me and asked about Bill Stafford and the DSSG. The Building was filled to capacity and man did i show off and play some steel. any how we had a chance to invite this crowd to the june 30 th show. I am excited about june 30th especially with all of the great players and participants that or coming. And to my friend & mentor Mr Hal Higgins thank you for coming to see me play at the Ole South Jamboree last month. ok better go now..

Post by Ben ODell »

Looks like, (according to weather man), we should have some of our typical gulf coast weather ahead for the show.

I know it's gonna be a bunch warmer down here after the show. There's sure gonna be some heat on the stage, (talent)

Hey, guys and gals.

At least half of the names listed herein are friends of Laurie and me. I sure wish we could make this one, but we don't dare leave here at this time. We are having a new home built in Riverview, Florida and it is on the verge of being completed. We are expecting to do the walk-through and sign off at the closing any day now. If all of you will concentrate real hard during the show, maybe you can ESP the show to me. It's awful to know that many friends are going to be gathered together and having a musical blast a week from now and we can't be there.

GOT'ER GOIN ON

Post by Ben ODell »

Good news !!!

Since the storm, Ms Mickey been fussin at me about fixin that clothes line. FINALLY DID IT YESTERDAY !!!
Thanks to Jim Parker.

Jim made the comment about "Ben tuning up that ole bass". Well I went to work on that. It wouldn't tune up. I determined it was them ole, wore out, rusted up, kinked, strangs. so I went,,,,, and this time, I bought me some brand new, first hand, strangs.

I usually wait for "HAND-ME-DOWNS" from them fine bass players like Mike Hoover, and Ben Brogdon. Really get a deal from them sometimes. They play them 5 strange gittars and mine only got 4. AND,,, they change them things out every couple of years or so. I usually tie them 5th strangs together and add to Ms Mickey's clothes line. This time, I had 4 of them 5th strangs, and 4 from my gittar. Ms Mickey sho is proud of me.

So Jim, we really got'er going on now. that is, if I put them strangs in the right places. Aught to be alright till I get some more from Mike and Ben.

We got the makin's of a real barn burner coming up on the coast folks. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all there.

If you've never heard the guitar talents of Bob Saxton, you'll be amazed. Matter of fact, just go down the list Bill Stafford has submitted and that list is just crammed full of amazing talent. This is one you do not want to miss.

To all the folks who are joining us from out of town, we pray you a safe trip in both directions.

Post by Roland Buras »

Hey Ben you need to send that idea of Bass string clothes line to the USA patent office and get it registered. By the way what tuning would that be in.
I guess that might be a question for miss Mickey. I will ask her on June 30th at the DSSG steel show...........IN OCEAN STRINGS MS.............HA!

Just about here folks.
Ms Lana, arrangements have been made with the most gracious Hank Corwin. Hank wants to take Terry home with him after our Friday Nite Frolic to talk over all times. In my music room, just imagine being able to sit and listen and watch Hank and Bob Saxton and hopefully Ed Clark as they give us some of the best sounds around-not to mention all the others that desire to play for us in this setting.
More details of additional arrangements soon.

Jack, so glad you will be here and for our Friday nite frolic too.. Looking forward to hearing you this time.
And an added treat-Pee Wee Whitewing will be bringing Ora Oubre, Texas, with him. Ora's first love is steel guitar and he will also be heard on bass during the afternoon and evening to give ole Ben a break or two.
It is so good to be part of a special event in a player's lifetime-this time I will get to experience two of our legends meeting on our stage-Hank Corwin informed me that when he, Hank, was about 15 years of age, he heard Pee Wee with the Hank Thompson band and that enthused him to really be serious with his steel guitar talents and that Pee Wee has always been one of his idols ever since. Now he will have this great pleasure and honor to meet Pee Wee personally here on our stage. Hopefully, I will be able to have them do some really big band songs together. Have to wait and see.

Thanks again to all for this wonderful support.

I never Knew

Post by Ben ODell »

R.J. I never knew, or thought anybody would ask me what I had that clothes line tuned to. So after you axed the question, I took my ole trusty ear out there, thumped that booger, and lo-and behold ,,,,, "K" FLAT MINOR. 14 turns on that turn buckle, brought the thing up to a HI-"C". Now that thing hums like a 20 penny finishing nail, hit with a greasy ball pean hammer.

Now wait a minute Bill! In regards to Hank and the 15 year old stuff. My buddy Pee-Wee ain't that old. OR,,,, did I mean???...........

Either way, It will surely be good to see the both of them on our stage together. WHAT A TREAT !!!!! AND,, the influence apparantly worked cause Hank, (like Pee-Wee) is a GOOD-UN !!!!

I talked to the guys from over around Mobile way yesterday afternoon, and it appears there will be a nice group of folks from over there, with us. Herman Wainwright (from Citronelle, Al) said he had to faningle a day off but sure wanted to be there to hear Tony Lane........"MASH THE GAS". If I do some serious coaxing, Tony may give us the opportunity to hear his guitar playing talent. My Buddy Tony knows about a jillion of them "BIG OLE COLLEGE CHORDS". He'd always ask me to throw a towel over his left hand .... SO NOBODY COULD STEAL ANY OF THEM LICKS.

That is good news about Pee-Wee bringing Ora. That'll give me a chance to "SLIDE INTO THIRD", (beat R.J. & Wayne Goff, to the chow line).

This is gonna be one for the record books on the coast. If you live in and around the coast, don't forget to tune your radio dial to 1640 am at 8:00 am to hear Bill and Hank, as they put the news out on the airways.

SEE YA'LL THERE
