Who the heck is this

Post by Derrick Frank »

Charley and ken, spot on.
Hi guys, like to introduce myself, Derrick Frank, stage name, Slim Pickind, name came from the wife on the first day I bought my first steel guitar home and set it up in the lounge. The band came to have a look at it, and said the best way to learn is to start playing with the band immediatly, where upon, the wife said,"the pickins will be a bit slim" whereby some wag said,"thats a good stage name" and it stuck, so I was branded with it. We knew there was an actor in the states with the same name, so we changed the surname spelling to, Pickins, and it's been with me ever since.
From 1970 I have had the pleasure with playing with some great artistes from the states when they were over here on tours, i.e. Tex Ritter, Rose Maddox, Lyne Harper,Don Gibson, Carle Perkins, Vernon Oxford, and Dennis (McCloud) Weaver.
And what a great experience it has been, as I got into steel playing just at the time the American Stars started touring over here, and it gave me a rather sharp, but great learning curve on steel.
At 69 I still play with younger bands, and at time wonder at the antics they get up to, but then I think, I was like that in the earley years. At this time I have found a greate passion for Hawaiian Steel Guitar, may have something to do with the sweet sound of the song's, the instrument, and my pace of life.
I am pleased to be able to be included in your circle of musicians, and hope to be able to exchange information and ideas in the future, god bless you all,Slim.

Bobby Bowman, how on earth did you manage to extricate Ben from all the OTHERS here that are also "Posing as steel Players ?"

Brint, I understand that colloquialisms can sometimes suffer the "Trans-Atlantic syndrome"

Bang On = Dead Right = Spot On = Yo Bro = Correct etc.

Basil, on this side of the creek "Bang On" can mean a lot of things, "Right On" is not one of them. And Derrik, nice to meet you. Sounds like you've had a good life of music.
