The trick is finding the quietest one you can find with the hardest surface. The hard surface will transfer vibration better, the quieter the motor is the better you will be able to hear the strings. Mine is medium quiet but has a chromed plastic surface that is almost as hard as metal.

James Mayer wrote:Actually, not really. I'm curious as to what it would sound like. I love my eBow and and my salt-shaker sitar bar. I'm always looking for new sounds. Forget it's conventional use for now, what would a vibrating slide sound like? Would it make any difference? Would it be unusable?
Kinda OT, but James, I see that you have an EBow now (incidentally, I just borrowed one from a friend today to try on lap steel) - did that get you any closer to the Bill Elm / FODM sound you were looking for?

I don't know about playing steel with one, but I know how you could use one to have some real fun with some one. You could tape it under a mic. stand base and they would have fits trying to figure out whats going on when they turn on the mic.
I just hope you all practice safe steel playing.
