First time I ever played with a steel player was in about 1972.
We had a small 3 man country band, Drummer/singer, Guitar/Sax Player and me on Bass. Played a one bar town in northern California.
On night the guitar was a no show. Pat the drummer said he'd call a steel player he knew.
I had visions on some horrid slide player making noises all night.
Turned out to be two fellows, Don Mathews on a Fender 1000 or maybe it was a 2000 and his buddy, Big Jim on guitar.
Wow, did I ever have my eyes opened!... Don was great and I stood behind him all night listening to the amazing sounds his hands were making.
I decided that night that I'd get one of those things and 5 years later got my first Sho-Bud 10, 3+2.
I do not know what ever happened to Don but I'd heard he had moved to Reno.
He got his Fender when he was overseas in the Army. He had writen to Fender company, told them he was in the service and played steel. He wanted to know if they could make him an amp that would work with 110 or 220, 50 or 60 cycles.
Got no direct answer, but some months later was told there was some packages at mail call.
He got there to find a brand new double neck 1000 or 2000 (Not sure but think it had 8 strings???) with a Twin Reverb amp set up for all power sources. Also a letter from Leo himself thanking Don for his service and gifting him the lot.

I just need to make it clear that Jay's "Fender Pedal Steel" forum is not connected to The Steel Guitar Forum, or to the usergroup here. It's run on a different server somewhere in the Sierra mountains, far from Cloverdale.
