We should be aware of the Don Helms version.

I have not read this whole thread but I doubt this has come up. There is a similar thing that's been going on for the last few years with a backing track called Canon Rock. Many great young rock guitarists have posted their version of the same song and using the same back ground tracks on youtube. It all started with the one I've posted below. Check it out and look at all the views this one has had and be sure to check out some of the other versions. Its outrageous!

Well being as its resurrected AGAIN, I'll reiterate my earlier post:

Well, I was just playing around with CCH and he said I should post the noodling on the forum, so, here is my noodling at it, warts and all.
(I'll probably take a serious stab at it next week)

Firstly I tried to disguise the melody by adding extra notes, but not subtracting any of the original melody ones, then I played the melody as chords, then from the hula vamp onwards, the melody in open and close harmony with the occasional chord.
The first and second part is the Fender 1000 and THEN the resurrected long scale Fender Stringmaster Mk1 Twin, twice through, Then the 1000 again..

Peavey Nashville 112 via its own "DI" to logic Pro 8 on a G5 twin 2.5Ghz
Tribotone Bar (The 10 string one)

Rounded off with a complete lack of attention to the details of playing !! I was experimenting with ToonTrack's EZ Drummer and all the new plugins from Universal Audio..

In Hanks version it's an 18 bar sequence whereas on the Don Helms video on YouTube, Don plays it as 17 bars, so I made it an even 16 and completely missed out the extra bar of 4 halfway through, and the extra bar of 1 at the end of each cycle.


Since then I've progressed to a Mac Pro with eight cores, Logic 9 and MUCH more. Not so sure about the playing having progressed though, too much time spent waffling and not enough practise (what is enough practise?)

The second recording was similar to other recordings of the tune I've heard from you, but the first one really blew me away. Your thorough knowledge of Hawaiian styles enables you to make Hawaiian arrangements of just about anything, as you used to do at the Castaways Club, and you excel at that more than anyone else I've listened to.

Thanks Alan, Part of that is the long scale Stringmaster twin you restored for me.
Maybe I'll get to do another version when I finish the Stringmaster Quad acquisitions.. (Have nearly all the parts) any parts I don't have are going to be fabricated by Mike Eacock (The guy who restores JCB's for a hobby)He's a student of mine, and a nice player he is too..
Of course the bodies are going to be a BIG help..

After four years I think it's time to resurrect this post. Does anyone have more arrangements to add?
Here's a version that Basil and I did many years ago. Basil is playing pedal steel and I'm playing non-pedal. The difference is obvious (apart from Basil's having a lot more talent.)
