I think playing by ear or by reading musical notation really depends on the context. If for example, your musical gaols are playing steel in a country band then playing by ear is a fine way to do it. Studio work, show work, etc. require a better and more organized method of communication other than passing a CD around.
Musical notation does have its place. It is a "langauge" that is universal and expressive. Doctors learn latin (or did) so that they can converse in a universal languge with another doctor that speaks a different language. Musicians have the same advantage by reading musical notation...you can play those great Italian pieces withought knowing Italian.
It is a great and organized way to share complete musical ideas verses "here, let me see your guitar a minute....it goes like this..."
