BJ Cole, and then Melvin Duffy, with Mojave 3 - very lovely! My money's on straight slide guitar on LOVE SONGS ON THE RADIO, but I've been known to be wrong.
Imagine if Ivo Watts-Russell had chosen to use more pedal steel with, say, THIS MORTAL COIL. Wow....

The album SECRET PATHS by Dave Cousins (Strawbs) with Melvin is absolutely gorgeous.

I heard the track I TURNED MY FACE INTO THE WIND on the radio, and was floored.

Daniel,

if Ivo had used steel on It'll end in tears I probably worn out more than just the one vinyl copy. love that album.

WXRT here in Chicago has been playing this quite a bit. I really love it. The playing is very close to the type of thing I strive for with my band.

Nice song, Justin.
Any idea who played steel on the studio, or this live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDOcbMic ... ure=relmfu ?

I know Maggie Bjorklund has been mentioned here, but I don't think this has popped up yet:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4sUsJSHFPQ

And Jon Rauhouse is frequently name-checked; this is a tune on one of his CDs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXf4LiXS ... re=related

Didjy'all see this one yet, with BJ Cole:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTMQh7MJamk

I feel fortunate that the bands and people with whom I work give me the freedom to play - nay, perhaps expect me to play - "outside the box". In fact, a recent offer to play old standards, if I have the time, has given me pause - I love old country, but playing that when I could be doing original music and continue developing my own style is not the most attractive of options to me.
Not disparaging the standards, just want to move forward.

Well said Daniel. And some nice selections.
I believe it is the guy from Calexico playing with Amos Lee.

Mazzy Star has gotten back together. Here is the B side to their new single with come beautiful steel on it.

Thanks, Justin.
Yes, Amos' site indicates (some members of) Calexico lent a helping hand, which would mean Paul Niehaus on pedal steel. I love how he uses effects between some of Calexico's (live) songs.
The live versions of Amos Lee feature a steeler who is decidedly not Paul, but is quite tasteful:
http://www.vevo.com/watch/amos-lee/el-c ... BN31100003

I recall the name Mazzy Star from years ago; the new song is quite nice, and here again, I wonder who's on steel? Seemingly no end to what our instrument can accomplish, given a chance.

And I know Josh Homme of Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age played some lap steel during the dessert sessions but I can't find any video of it. But it's great stoner rock stuff.

This band, Rameses III, uses lap steel really well-post-Lanois/Budd/Eno

I love Alcorn and Heather Leigh Murray
love to hear more about these from y'all

Great to have you join the thread, John!
I checked out your own site - do you play lap or pedal steel with High Aura'd? CDs?
Is that lap steel Rameses III uses? CDs with steel?
Love to have more details on players, etc., but the music is sweet.
Susan Alcorn posts regularly here, but on youtube she has a channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/sus453
And other videos not on her channel can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... lcorn&aq=f
Heather Leigh Murray - like this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpADW2iZ ... D5996AC47C
(More on youtube, though not a lot, some she plays bass guitar, and some have atrocious sound.)
You must have checked out Chas Smith, no?

Hey Dan-
I play lap steel-I am learning pedal and loving it-but I'm not planning on sitting in with anyone soon-
playing it out for the first time this month-but lots of long tones-a pice for pedal, lap, ebow and field recordings-standard stuff!
High aura'd is just me-solo-

Rameses II is three guys-1 lap player, I guitarist, 1 keyboard dude

love to know more about Chas Smith-
and any more like these guys-
I love Lanois-also, if you guys have never heard Loren Connors, check him out- a six string player, but the sweetest, best slow tones ever-

John, that's Chas Smith in the TACK videos I listed.
He's playing his modded steel. He has 5 CDs on Cold Blue, all at amazon or the label (http://www.coldbluemusic.com/)
He posts here regularly:
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/profile. ... ile&u=2543

Connors is quite fascinating. Imagine if he did play steel!
Any CDs of yours available? And RAMESES III always has lap steel, eh?

I'd highly recommend the Ramese II record I Could Not Love You More-
really beautiful-always a lap steel-influenced also by the Hired Hand soundtrack, which is amazing-Bruce Langhorne

my stuff is all sold oit-out of print-
i just had a tape come out a week ago and it's sold out

Here's one with a lot of eBowed steel and some really poorly played "normal" steel licks in the middle. Round it out with cajon, tabla and uke.

http://www.myspace.com/thesubcons/music ... x-26955638

We recorded it back in '07.

And here's some stuff from a post-apocalyptic spaghetti western
project that we recorded in '10. Pretty much all electric sounds are
steel, save my baritone guitar parts.

More eBow

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3108686/06%20or ... ertius.mp3

bender and echoplex action:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3108686/07%20sigh.mp3

More bender-steel as well as playing the fuzzy sounds with an allen wrench. No distortion was used. Whale and donkey sounds are ebow.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3108686/04%20moon.mp3

Here's a cover of a Neil Young theme with our added lyrics and solo section.

How about
Petur Hallgrims playing with Sigur Ros (comes in around 1:35)

Or Robert Randolph playing with Ozzy Osbourne doing the rolling stones

Cool, Justin!
Figures that Sigur Ros would use some steel, but Ozzy??!! Dang, that Robert gets around!
Where did you get Petur's name as steel guitarist?

And all you young fellers and newbies that don't play country, post!

Just found this, added in another thread by John Roche:

Interview, with music at the end. Yup, BJ again!

And a part of a contemporary opera that utilizes pedal steel, which comes in periodically:

Barry Sless, with MoonAlice, does a fine solo here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-_DocdW ... re=related

Daniel, that opera piece was really cool.

Just came across this band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9Gymxlv ... re=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJVV_aonnrM

the guy has a real cool sound. I don't care for the singer much, but the steel is rally fun to listen to.

Also ran across this which I enjoyed quite a bit.
http://www.myspace.com/mathiasdanielsson

I got petur's name from a google search for Sigur Ros and pedal steel. I haven't bothered to pull out my copy of the album to see if he is listed. Should probably do that but I was busy getting married a few days after that was posted so It got lost in the shuffle. I'll try and look tomorrow.

Hey, congratulations, Justin!
Didja play steel at your reception? I did at mine.

So, Bill Frisell's latest includes Greg Leisz, on songs by John Lennon. Here's Sneaky Pete on one of John's own:

These have been posted preciously on the forum in other threads but as long as we're at it here I might as well share a bit of my hard rock pedal steel from the late 1970's with the Sky River Band...

http://www.pdxaudio.com/fire%20in%20yer%20eyes.mp3

...and in a gentler, kinder vein, a couple of Ron Rogers' tunes from last May's "Country and Eastern" release...

http://www.pdxaudio.com/ronrogers/underthewheels.mp3

http://www.pdxaudio.com/ronrogers/soulsalvation.mp3

...and of course the "Alabama Chrome" video gets back to the gnarlier side...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta_9WCC3 ... e=youtu.be

...or you may prefer the steel with strings and flutes from a recent dance company soundtrack...

http://www.pdxaudio.com/bvoxopen.mp3

Unfortunately we have not yet recorded our pedal steel covers of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five," War's "Low Rider," Doug Sahm's "She's About a Mover" or Booker T.'s "Time is Tight" but if you come out to see the show we would be happy to go there for you any time :P

The singer songwriter that I work with off and on has finally released her first CD. Its all over the place genre wise and has a ton of steel on it. I would love to hear what you think. Link is below.
