I did too. I figure thats a blessing in disquise, The Girls are much older now, a little heavier and Those lovely flowers of womanhood are most likely wilted by now.

What a great new topic! I have been playing steel for almost 2 years and I posted a topic regarding choking up under the gun. Paul Franklin responded ,that he thought I was a good player and he had never heard me. I knew with that statement that he is a great human being. I front a band in Iowa, mostly western swing, ballrooms and have for about 17 years. I had a steel player by the name of Don Goettsch who has since passed on, and was a great friend to many musicians. He said that he stayed with this band the longest of any other band he has ever played with. When I asked why, he said,"..there aren't any a$$holes in this group. That has been my philosophy, no attitudes or pomposity (spelling) We are busy and successful and still friends.
Thanks for being a great bunch of human beings. Hey Paul, I'm having a jam session August 18th at Troy Mills Iowa. Come on up! I'll bet you never played there before.

In terms of what road steel players versus session players, here's what I know. I have never worked a union master session in Nashville, but the scale gigs I used to do in LA were somewhere around $250 for a 3 hour session. I imagine the Nashville scale has to be higher than that now (come on, you Nashville guys, break out the union book and let us know). If you do 3 double scale gigs a day 5 days a week, you would make some serious money. But no $500k a year, I would imagine. The top session guitar player here in Seattle makes about $80-100k a year, but he does sequencing, arranging, and a lot of turd polishing. I would imagine that would be a good income for most session players in any city (forget the A++ team). I make literally dozens of dollars a week in sessions.....
In terms of road gigs, it's all over the map. Ron Wood has got to make a lot more than a million a year whenever he drags his steel on the road with the Rolling Stones. When I was in Nashville in the late 70s, I was lucky to get $100 a night with an opry act. I have heard that it isn't a whole lot better these days. I would expect that most road players earn somewhere between that amount. I doubt whether many Nashville road players earn more than a couple of grand a week on the road, but I could be wrong.
Anybody who does this thing for the money needs to have his head examined, anyway.

......Best TEAM won??? ah,like tag team pro wrestling, I get it now.
......well,they displayed some great examples of "people skills", I'll give them that much. However they did twist some facts for their own benefit & they had enough of the "leg humpers" righteous indignations to fuel their efforts. In other words, You've been had again friends.....but take comfort, you were done in by those who are the best at that particular game.
No more debating,no more insults....anyone who wants to put their money where their mouth is,anytime, anyplace.Id advise you to check out the "other teams" roster first, though
.Oh & btw, turn out the lights, the party's over........

Hey Dan!
Even using your "consevative" figures, and even working only 300 days a year (I assure, the "best" work more than that), the figures for a top studio musician come very close to $250,000. Not millionaire's territory, but certainly 4 times more than the best road musicians might make...wouldn't you agree?
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 14 July 2001 at 10:03 AM.]

Jody, .....the best ???? I cant cop to that, but thanx anyway
.
There are several excellent P/P repairmren out there.... Bryan Adams, Billy Bowman,Jerry Roller, etc.Im not sure where you live but perhaps one of them might be closer to you....we dont want to ship them old jewels around more than we have to
...but Id be happy to speak with you about this in some fashion or another. You might try emailing me...or MR's. Bowman, Adams or Roller, etc. Im sure whoever you decide on will satisfy your needs.
Im quite booked up at the moment, what with the usual load of restorations, some sessions
etc.
I do expect to pop free in the first part of August, however.
Nice to meet you in Tulsa, btw...MC

Mike
I believe that was Jody
Sanders we were hanging with in Tulsa.
Of course, without seeing them both in a police line-up, we really can't be sure, now can we?
