Jim,
That is one beautiful guitar!

I saw your reason for the Emmons fretboards, but even without that condition they make the guitar look even better!

set up

Post by Billy Carr »

S-10D Rains, port red mica, 3 & 5, 705 pickup, emmons on the pedals. LKL raises E's, LKR lowers E's, RKL lowers 6 and raises 1,2. RKR lowers 2 a half then to a whole tone, lowers 7 a whole and lowers 9 to a C#. LKV lowers 10 to a A. Amp is a NV-112 and effects are a little reverb and a DD-3. Seat is red/grey made by Longhorn. Use a Hilton electronic pedal also. Nothing but Frenchy Steel Mill strings. I use Remington gun with teflon to keep guitar oiled. Bar is rotated between a Carpbar and a BJS bar. Tuner is VS-II. Picks are Zookies L-20 and other two are nationals with black covering by Andy Hinton.

Thanks, Justin ... I have to admit, the Emmons fret boards really do dress up the guitar nicely and I like them a lot. :) I see you're from Gainesville. I grew up in Sanger, but haven't been back there since I graduated high school in 1973.

Billy's post reminded me that I never mentioned my guitar's actual setup, copedent or string brand and sizes ... so, I should probably include that information real quick to complete my steel guitar setup description (by the way, I like this thread ... it's very interesting seeing all the different setups people are using).

Roger, thanks for mentioning your volume pedal ... made me realize that I'd forgot to mention mine in my setup description ... I was wanting to be complete in my description and keep realizing that I've left something out.

I use a Goodrich Model 120. :)

Sho-Bud Pro I (3 and 4) with pickup split switch
Sho-Bud Pedal
Mesa Lonestar Special (5, 15, and 30, usually set on clean 30 with no treble, all bass, no mids, no presence and very low volume to avoid issues with the natives)
Strings? (factory  Tom Bradshaw)
George L Bar
National thumb and three finger picks
I also have migrane precursor, which might have pushed me to the black too.

Still learnin', still lovin'.
Guild Starfire IV and JF30, electric and acoustics. All blonds. Go figure.
I use a Digitech RP500 without amp modeling for multieffects on the Guilds (chorus, delay, tremelo, etc...).

Jim,
I live in Taylor. Could it be you thought I was from Tyler? Taylor is closer to Austin
I do know where Sanger is though.

Sorry, Justin ... I could've sworn that when I posted the other day, your avatar said Gainesville, Texas, USA. It might be time that I seriously think of getting my eyeglasses prescription changed. :)

If you're including my rig in that big rigs number, that's why mine stays permanently set up safely at home! :D

Most often used setup is:

1. 1964 Emmons D-10
2. Hilton volume pedal, or Goodrich 120
3. Nashville 112, or Webb 614-GP, depending on gig
4. GeorgeL cords
5. GeorgeL stainless strings
6. Steeler's Choice seat
7. occasionally Boss RV-5, most often amp reverb
8. D2F covers on everything, and also a Danny Bentley fiber cover for the NV112.

There are other guitars I occasionally use, but everything else pretty much remains constant.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?
