"Revenge" by David Allan Coe. Some of the stuff from his "blue" album(s) is pretty weird too. But he's great, a true original.

creepiest one I heard was original Will the circle be unbroken. Where the singer starts out waiting for the hurst to take his mother away...(not sure if I got the title right) or being flushed from the bathroom of your heart by J. Cash. I don't want to be in either place.

I don't want a Praying Mantis Love Afair. I heard a guy by the name of Danny Martin sing this song with The Rodeo House band in SF Bay area. It's all about not wanting to get your head ripped off after the lovin".

Many of the songs that I first learned as a kid were of a tragic nature. Besides Knoxville Girl there was
Bad Company,about a young man that left home and started drinking and raising hell.He killed his girlfriend and got hanged.Last line to the song..

It's now I'm on the scafold
My moments are not long

My friend Les Severs had a song out called THE PUREST PEARL. It was banned from the radio after a few airings because it was about a guy whose wife died and he kept her body. He would put her in bed move her around the house, take her for a ride in the car etc. The tag line was " I'll never let her body touch the cold, cold ground. Written by Jimmy Lebak.

If any of you murder song lovers find yourself in Austin, TX around Valentine's Day you should try to make it to Teri Joyce's "Dead Sweethearts Ball" anti-Valentine's Party. A big gathering of Austin's best country singers and pickers with one simple rule. At least one person has to die in each song. The carnage death toll is kept on a tombstone. virtually everything by Townes Van Zandt

and "Blackjack County Chain" (written by Red Lane; recorded to no notice whatsoever by Willie Nelson in the early 60s; done lately with a bungled (plural) title by Del McCoury)

My vote is for "Forbidden Angel" by Mel Street. No one dies but it's the only country song I know of the laments the consequences of statutory rape.

OK, there's no murder, but "Hello walls" and "The grand tour" have a similar kind of sick obsessiveness to them (which, as the previous pages of this thread demonstrate, makes for good country lyrics). "Lucille" is a little creepy as well.

There's a link on the YouTube site to "Patches" which is also pretty creepy. And yet, Dickey Lee wrote "She thinks I still care" which has to be one of the best country songs on wheels. Which just goes to show the amazing range of human creativity, or else, how much better George Jones sings than Mr. Lee.

Patches I remember - my older sister used to have the record. Sometimes I catch myself playing it when I'm noodling on the steel. Good point, it is pretty creepy. "...it may not be right, but I'll join you tonight....". Yuck. The heck of it is, after all these years I still remember most of the words, and I haven't heard it in an embarrassing number of decades.

I agree about "She Thinks I Still Care" - one of the great country songs, and one of the great songs period. So Lee really had the waterfront covered in terms of his songwriting abilities for sure.
