I always liked "Bringing Mary Home", along with "Little Rosa" and "City of New Orleans", but JW Day's mention of "Old Rivers", by Walter Brennan, brought back some memories, too. Red Sovine had another good one out about an old woman requesting the band to play an old song, but I can only remember a few lines...

<i>"Sing me a sad song,
I won't be here long.
And there's no one to sing
to me an old love song." </i>

Dan Tyack's version of Will the Circle be Unbroken (Unsanticified Gospel Revival CD) is incredible - a MUST HEAR!!!

Of course, there's Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven

Also like Grand Tour - but wondering why the wife left her clothes hanging in the closet? (How could that be REAL??? Image)

Owen, I love Jody and the Kid, too! - "As surely as the seasons, she's changing to a woman; and, I've lived enough to call myself a man."

One of my favorite songs, that I'm working on as a (so~so) instrumental is Johnny Darrell's “With Pen In Hand”! The biggest challenge is working out an ending! Johnny's version fades out, humming the melody! Hard to beat that!

Two more of my favorite sad-song recordings are: 1. John Wesley Ryles’ ‘Original’ “Kay” and 2. Curtis Leach’s ‘Original’ “Golden Guitar”! I also like Haggard’s “Sing A Sad Song”!

I am surprised no one mentioned Faron Youngs song " That little girl of mine "
If that don't make all you dads get a lump in your throat..." If you think your lonely" is right up there too.

I've been learning the steel parts on Gary Allan's version of "Don't Tell Mama I Was Drinkin'" and after the first verse and chorus, there's a high steel part where the steel is really cryin'. Brett, Emmons S-10, Morrell lapsteel, GFI Ultra D-10

Oft. times I think how sad it is in a world with all it's might
That a man like Trumby met his death
cos he couldn't read or write.
One of Slim Dusty's best.
