Bob Snelgrove tells me Bobby Black will be there from about noon-3pm. He (and others throughout the day) may need a tad of help getting their gear up and down the stairs, so let's all watch for those in need of a bit of roadie work and please do pitch in if needs be. (I know that after the jam is over I'll need help putting a borrowed PA system into my minivan.)

I got to see and hear both JayDee Maness and Bobby Black at the San Jose Jam today. Both at the same time, taking rides on the same song. Now that is something. They are both so strong.

Bill Llewellyn is a gracious host and plays "Teach Your Children" very well. Congrats Bill on a wonderful steel guitar event.

I got to meet so many forumites. Billy Wilson and Dave Zirbel helped me with my gear. I MET b0b! Hooray! Had a nice chat with Mike Perlowin. Charlie Wallace and I did the hat thing. Raybob Bowman and his family are just sweethearts. Bob Snelgrove was grinning, lovin' it. David Wren said hey, then went back to jammin', just digging in to that Carter. I met David Phillips. David and many of the players were playing universal tunings. And the double 12's outnumbered the double 10's. Mark Eaton let me play his dobro - it is so nice. I met Marc Friedland. Jonathan Mitguard and I were side by side in the circle. I think I met Richard Sinkler, the day was getting long. Pete Grant is terrific, a lot of fun to talk with. James Chu, from Hong Kong, and I exchanged CDs. I met John O'Neill. I'm going to visit Jim Baron with my Fessy - more picking - grin. Kerry Johnson brought all that Texas road experience and showed it to me with his red JCH. I met JayDee and just like a 20 yr. old, my tang got all toungled up. You'd think I could talk sensibly in the presence of a hall-of-famer.

The ped-a-bros were my axes. They're not geared to band situations, but we tried anyway. I think it was good that players had the opportunity to play them and see them first hand. And I got some good feedback talking microphones with an engineer.

I enjoyed jamming - no one seemed to get injured from all the chunks of rust my playing was spraying the room with.

It's a little after 1:00, and I just got back from my gig about an hour ago.

Thank you for remembering me Peggy. It was nice meeting you as well, and listening to you play your ped-a-bro. I've got some nice pictures of them too. I don't know how to post them, but I'd be glad to forward them to you in an email if you'd like.

I was glad I was able to get there, even though if was for a short while.
I wish I had time to set up my guitar and join everyone, but that will have to wait until next time.

It was GREAT seeing everyone again, and also meeting some new folks.
As Peggy mentioned, Bill was a great host as usual, and everyone sounded so good! Truly a special event.

I do have some pretty good pictures. If anyone knows how to post them for everyone to enjoy, I'd be glad to email them to you.

Actually, the single 12's outnumbered the double 10's. Double 12's are still fairly rare, but Jim Baron and I both play them. The single 12 was the most popular configuration in the room.

Another odd thing was the presence of four Excel guitars. I don't think I've ever seen that many Excels in one room. Very interesting!

The high points for me were playing Peggy's C6th Franklin Pedabro, and meeting James Chu. Previously, I had only brief encounters with Peggy and only email contact with James. It was great fun to visit with them both.

Hi all,

This is a quick heads up regarding videos taken during the San Jose jam. This only applies to those of us (yep, me too!) who took video footage of the event. It's been brought to my attention that some players would like for footage of their playing not get into circulation without permission. This can be an issue particularly for professional steelers. It would be understandable that many would want to maintain control of any material that might get distributed. One seasoned player expressed concern that amateur videos often get around and end up being sold, and it's reasonable that the player would want control of such material.

This is just a long way of saying that if you shot any video, it would be best not to casually copy it off to others. The proper approach would be to get the permission of all players on the tape. That sounds complicated, but I have done that for past jams I videotaped (and edited sections out as requested). So if you have video of the 11/4/06 jam, enjoy it, but very kindly be respectful of the players' wishes....it's best to keep it just "yours" unless it has been cleared with the players.

At future jams, I think I'll make up little innocuous badges people can wear who would rather not be videotaped (something like a "V" with a red circle-slash through it). That would address any concerns right up front.
