Take your steel out of the trunk of a car for a job in N.D.in the middle of winter.
Allen is right in pointing out that the function of the PSG dictates much of the form. Other threads which are considering hydralics or digital pitch shifting would allow more flexible pedal location, but the manner of playing (picking and sliding a bar on the strings) dictates the table-like design.
The suggestions that have been made are mostly cosmetic, with the exception of Chas Smith's mysterious instrument and the Harmos guitar. I doubt that the PSG will take on a radical new appearance until there is a functional reason to do so. While we admire the lovely wood and metalwork of a fine PSG, one of the coolest 6-strings is a blonde Telecaster with a black pickguard, about as plain as you can get, but very functional.
