Get well soon we are all pulling for you. Hang in there, you will be back sooner then you think.

As a luthier I've seen so many accidents with electric saws and (mostly) routers, so much so that I'll spend hours using hand tools to avoid power tools, wherever possible. A little-known danger is grinding wheels, which can shatter and send pieces of stone in all directions at bullet speed, and have been known to embed themselves in the skull.

Bobbe's accident should be a lesson to us all to be extremely careful. Most accidents happen in the home and home workshops for the most unlikely of reasons, such as falling onto a knife or chisel.

Remember that we have two thumbs and eight fingers and we need all of them. It's only too easy to lose them.

Bobbe, as bad as your injury was you were very fortunate as a steel guitarist that it was your bar hand that was injured, and not your picking hand. I don't know how much regular guitar you play, but remember Django Reinhardt, who played brilliant work with only two fingers on his left hand.

As my English ancestors would say, "Keep your pecker up".

(For the sake of American readers I should point out that in England you pecker is your nose, and the phrase means "keep your head in the air and maintain a pleasant and optimistic disposition".)

To add to what Alan said about safety per grinding wheels..DO NOT GRIND ALUMINUM, they will load up, and explode. That was the #1 problem that I had in the shop where I used to work,also when you change wheels, break the old one so it cannot be reused.

Yes, Bill is absolutely right. When you grind something with a low density, such as aluminum or plastic, it melts into the pores of the stone. Over time it expands and contracts at a different rate than the stone until eventually the stone develops hairline cracks, some of them inside the stone where they can't be seen. Rev the grinder up and chunks start flying off. Always make sure the guard is in place. It won't always save you but it will catch a lot of débris, and slow down the "killer" chunks.

Just got back from an out of town trip.....like the thousands of musicians and steel guitar players when this news about you came out, we are very, very upset about your accident. This is hard to take.

Uncle Doug makes a good point....We are going to send out a posse to get the table saw and power tools away from you......

Please, please do all possible to take care of yourself......you are deservingly loved in fellowship, a brother and endeared by legions of us out here and around the world........

just saw Bobbe this morning at the store and he is doing great, he can move his fingers and he will be back playing in no time.

Well, I'm lucky that the surgen hooked up the tendons where they are supposed to go, but I have very little movement in them, but what could you expect with them being in a cast, I feel 6 months will be an honest evaluation of the time required to make a 75% recovery, 3 years for 95%. 6 years I'll be as bad as ever!

I'll be playing poorly with the bar wired to my cast or bandages in two months, I'm not cancelling my show in Louisville, come up and laugh at me, I'll by chuckling my self!

Bill Ford, I wasn't grinding the aluminum strips, it was a carbon toothed saw, I know what the trouble was but the blame was truly all on me. (the saw is still for sale though)

Every bone in my hand I found out was shattered, with much aluminum imbedded in the hand, I feel this can only enhance my tone!

By the way, my humor freeked the nurses totally out, one said "oh my Lord, he lost three fingers",
I said, "no, I have them right here in my pocket!" She left the room and fainted!

But it warms my heart deeply to feel the great attitude in your post.
