GA, Roger E and Herb S have both shown that it is very easy to jump to conclusions before knowing all the facts. If they hadn't clarified this poor guy's mental health problems, then we would all have felt that he is an out and out con artist.
Let's hope that Mr Dardeman gets the support for his problems that he very obviously needs (if that isn't too patronising on my behalf), and that Mac is happy in the long run with the support that some of the Forumites have pledged.

But, if the person has medical issues and is not really capable of differentiating between right and wrong should everyone just turn their heads? Someone needs to be responsible for his actions and prevent anything like this happening again. If he is in such a situation there needs to be a guardian appointed and in control of his sales.
Irregardles, there has to be accountability for Mac's situation. Agreed it's "buyer beware" but this goes beyond that.

I agree with Charlie. Except for Mac and Dardeman, going further with this is none of anybody's business here, and should be treated as such.
My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg?

It's none of anybody's business if I get a speeding ticket. But if a bad deal is made within this community to the extent that others are compelled to help then that is "other's business".A point has been made that this may not have been done with any criminal intent but someone should be handling sales and communications for Mr.Dardman since he obviously cannot take care of it himself. That,to me,is an obligation.
If I hear it,I'm gonna try to steel it

It would be nice if, assuming he has any family, someone made his family aware of what was going on in the most tactful and polite manner possible. Perhaps they could help him. Its a shame that his condition is resulting in harm to others, but eventually it could very well result in harm to himself as well and if I were family I would be very much concerned about that. Im also inclined to say "its none of my business"...I'm not a detective, a cop, a hospice worker , a social worker, nor family, nor friend...but I hope Mr Dardeman gets the help he needs somehow.Richard Sinkler wrote:I just hope he has some family close to him to take care of him.

First off - it's great that these guys have agreed to get this steel back in shape. There is really a great community here! When I was young(er) I worked at a Volkswagen shop for awhile...there's just a good feeling when you get to help keep an old player "in the ball game" for a little longer.
Second - Any update on the arrival of the steel? Maybe some before pics? After reading 5 pages of this story I'm ready for the next chapter in "AS THE STEEL TURNS"

Ben,
You posted what I really wanted to say, but with the "It's nobody's business" sentiment popping up, I decided to hold back.
At first, I wanted to string him up by his unmentionables. As the word of his health problems came forward, I became more sympathetic. But, the fact of the matter is, he screwed (even if unintentional, which I don't believe) someone here on the forum and that is our business. As I stated, I hope he has family that cares or some close friends that can get him to seek the help he needs. He obviously can't function fully on his own. He needs to be under someone's care to prevent him from hurting others or himself.

Mac's Sho-Bud
Danny Goddard and other interested parties, in an effort to answer some of your questions or concerns, Mac's guitar has arrived here, and was found to be in the condition in which Mac and his friend, Don Sulesky described it as being in, and indeed is in need of serious repair! In it's current condition as received here, this guitar was/is not a completely working or playable instrument.
Although I do have "before" photos of this guitar, I am not at all interested in exploiting Mac's guitar here, as I don't believe that would do anything good or productive in helping to resolve this situation. I have shared photos of this guitar with John Coop, which was done for the purpose of discovery to help determine exactly what would be needed at a minimum to remedy this unfortunate ordeal. Of course, we are going to be going way beyond the minimum needed on this one. The "why" is just because we want to and can!
John Coop and I have had several long conversations about this, both by phone and email, however, none of our communications were about Mr. Darteman, or Mac. Although certainly significant in this issue, here again, I find that to be totally non productive in helping to resolve this matter in any way.
Bottom line here guys, it is mine and John Coop's goal to restore Mac's guitar to better than new condition, or at least mechanically. I say "better than new" because there's no question that many Sho-Bud guitars had much to be desired regarding quality of parts and mechanical engineering, and this guitar is another good example of that. I think when all is said and done, Mac is going to be one very happy guy with his new guitar, and that's what this is truly all about to me, and obviously several others of you as well.
My personal thanks to the many of you who have contributed in helping to resolve this situation for a fellow steel player in need by providing funding to cover the shipping costs for Mac, and also a very special thank you to John Coop for providing the many expensive and precision made parts for this project, completely at his own expense. For those of you who have had the "coop" upgrades done to your guitars, little more need be said about the value of that.
As many of you know, working on steel guitars can be a bit labor intensive and time consuming, so this won't be something that will happen over night, but on the other hand, it won't be a long drug-out process either where Mac will have to wait long to get his guitar back.
At this time all I can offer here for certain is that John Coop and I are on it. If Mac and/or his friend Don wants to share photos with all of you of the "before and after" of this guitar, I will let them decide on that.
It is indeed very gratifying to see our fellow steel players banding together here to help one another, regardless of what that particular need may be. As I think most of your will agree, there is very little to nothing to be gained in forming a "witch hunt" in situations like this, however, there is indeed much to be gained in helping the injured party to quickly remedy the situation, and with that, put all the hurt and sadness behind them.

I want to thank Danny for updating you where this situation stands at this time.
I have had several talks with Mac over this in the last week and suggested to him that he needs to put this behind him and that the steel is in good hands.
As far as anything else on this matter I have said all I'm going to say.
I do want to thank Danny, Coop and all you Forum members for your concern for my dear friend.
Don
