I'm taking my Technician Class Test in two weeks! I signed up for a 1st Aid class from the Red Cross in January and Skywarn Spotter Classes in February. I Storm Chased as a younger man and really enjoyed the hobby. Music and girls replaced all that by the time I was 25. Now that the music scene is dead and all the girls around here are fat, I'm goin back to storm chasing....

I don't get it.
We can talk about Ham radio... on a steel forum?
But... we can't talk about religion on it...
... or firearms...
... or some types of humor...
It doesn't matter to me, really. Keep it going. We all have other interests, and I'm glad we can share them.
Well... some of them...
But it does seem odd... to me...

Steel Guitar is a wonderful Brother [and ]Sister-hood.
Steelers who are Amateur Radio Operators are also a terrific Brotherhood and I am delighted to be in the number.Checking out the Steeler-Hams on QRZ.com will help one to see the good public relations that a lot of these ham operators do for Steel Guitar !!

Well its too long a story to tell properly here, but I want to send out a group thank you to all you operators.
Almost 20 years ago my brother and I were sailing our 40 ft. boat from Tahiti to Hawaii. About halfway there (which put us about 1000 miles from ANYWHERE) our boat started breaking up on us. Though not licensed we had ham radio aboard for an emergency. Reception (and my skills) wasn't real good at the time and it took almost 24 hrs. of searching bands and spinning dials before I faintly heard 2 old boys in Iowa or somewhere in the midwest discussing (naturally) their rigs. I started hollering out a "Mayday" and will never forget after about a minute one of them saying "wait a minute...listen". I don't know who was more excited, me or them. I gave them the coordinates for our position and told them to contact the Coast Guard. With the ham's help they were able to dial us in and made radio contact within about 20 minutes. The Coast Guard took us off to their own frequency but I'll always remember what was by then an army of ham operators telling us that they were going to stay with us night and day until the situation was resolved. The Coast Guard was able to arrange for a Japenese frieghter to divert and rendevous with us before we had to get wet. As we bumped up along side this 1000 ft. freighter and got ready to scramble up a cargo net draped over the side, I was given the opportunity to salvage a handful of items. That sweet little Kenwood unit made it while my Fender double 8 didn't. My affections had changed.
The experience is definitly seared in my memory and I'm going to guess a couple of farmers in Iowa have a good story to turn to when talking about ones rig grows old. Thanks guys

Thanks Jeff for sharing that story and your right, some have good stories to tell. About 8 years ago, A woman with her young son and daughter, motor stopped running way out in the Gulf of Mexico. We triangulated the signal and gave it to the Coast Guard. Then stayed with them until they arrived.
I think God was aboard that day.

VK2AGV here, but not active on the bands any more. I was 10 years in the merchant navy as a radio officer and lost the desire for radio as a hobby after doing it for my living on a daily basis. Retired from the sea in 1992.
I keep the callsign because the previous holder (whom I know) was also at sea with it. When the callsign was issued to me I showed him the papers so he wouldn't think I was pirating it!
No plans to get active again at the moment...too busy with my steel guitar!

The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.
