| I like both amps for different reasons. The Fender, which I still have, has a solid warm mid range with extended highs and lows, while the Peavey has the best distortion free sound for its size and weight. However, when it comes to throwing one of them in the back of an SUV these days, I’ll go the light route. Maybe when I turn 70 next year I’ll feel differently, but not now. |

It doesn't matter what kind of amp Buddy uses. He's gonna sound like Buddy. IT'S ALL IN THE HANDS, MY FRIENDS !
btw, I've been using a Nashville 112 for every kind of gig. Haven't needed my NV 400 since I got the 112. ......... JD

I'll have to echo my buddy John
One important note re: the NV112:
It may not sound great 'out of the box'. 
Folks had mentioned that the speaker needs to be broken in and I kinda ignored it. I played a few gigs and thought it sounded kind of sterile. I used it for several more rehearsals and gigs and IT BLOSSOMED! I play in a VERY LOUD country/rock band with everything miked -- just using the amp/spkr as an onstage instrument monitor. Works GREAT for that application.
With Brad Sarno's Black Box, it is as warm as any amp made today and is plenty loud and clean, especially when miked. It is as close to the original Session 400 as anything Peavey has made in the interim.
I love my Standel amps and still use them often, but the NV112 is a very respectable amp, especially for its size and weight.

John D and Larry B, Thanks for your replies...one thing I have absolutely learned after playing for forty years is that a great player is gonna sound good no matter what type equipment he uses. I am definitely from the school of" it ain't the guitar...it's the man behind it" Alot of folks tend to get bogged down with equipment issues and sometimes to the exclusion of the more important ones such as learning,practicing and finally playing.There's nothing wrong however with trying to find out what equipment will work best for you.

I try to use some of the same equipment my favorite players use. Not that I'll sound like any of them, but I have to give myself the best chance. At least I know that stuff is capable of sounding good, (in the right hands, anyway...)

Absolutely. I play exactly the same equipment as the greats but somehow it doesn't sound the same. Jerry Byrd once sold his guitar to someone who wanted his sound, and the guy called him back to say it didn't sound the same when he played it!
I'm sure Buddy could get a tune out of an electric sponge ! |

Just so you know, This thread is a year old. Take a look at the date of my initial post. I posted it in July 2006. I asked a legitimate question out of mere curiousity, and got hammered with "IT DONT MATTER WHAT KINDA AMP BUDDY USES...BLAH BLAH BLAH". Buddy was kind enough to answer my question though. Sadly enough some make the dumb assumption that my asking about what a highly respected pro uses is equivalent to my thinking "If I use the same equipment then I'm gonna sound or play just like them". Ridiculous!

Naw...i sure can't see anyone getting peeved at you mike for asking a legitimate question, although i know on here it happens at times. Seems like a great question to me, and apparently so does buddy. Another legitimate question would be if Mike Brown still holds his view that every speaker needs some kind of customer burn in period before it's going to sound like it's suppose to....even though the majority of speaker manufacturers disagree with him...Now Mike that would make a great thread.......again  |

| Thanks George, and sorry for the rant. I suppose I may have overreacted a bit, but I hope you can see the point I was trying to make. I get awfully tired of reading posts where equipment is being discussed, and then somebody starts in about how equipment isn't going to change the way you play or sound. It just gets damned obnoxious after you've heard it a million times over and over and over. I don't think that anyone in their right mind actually believes one guitar or amp or volume pedal or bar size or whatever it may be is going to instantly make them sound like whoever they idolize. I do however know that if you like the guitar or amp you are playing through then you're going to play better than if you were playing on a guitar or amp you didn't like. While equipment is never a substitute for ability, it is important, and it's important to know whats out there and available to us as players, and it's fun to discuss and share our opinions on that equipment. Again, sorry for the rant. |

Mike, I'm with you. This is the "ELECTRONICS" section of the forum. It is specifically about gear. Your inquiry was quite fair. All the comments that "gear doesn't matter, it's all in the hands" do make a good point, but the fact is that great players with great tones are generally VERY selective and conscious of the gear they choose to use to deliver their sound. The electronics section of the forum is precisely the place to discuss these electronic issues, not dismiss them.

Howard, I thought you were being funny too. It made me chuckle. Nut'n personal. I think that there have just been so many comments in the past making that point that were in a much less humorous light. I guess I was responding in a more general way to the many comments in past years that took pretty hard jabs at others with legit tech questions. It's all great fun here on this electronics forum as far as I'm concerned. I can bs about gear all day and night and never get bored. The idea of tone being in the hands truly is a great discussion, especially for guys like me who often try to compensate for lesser talent with fancier gear. It's a great and powerful message. But I also wanted to help remind all of us that since this is the "electronics" thread, it truly is the place for gear and electronic geeks to talk shop. Also, if we can make sure we are all playing thru gear like the big guys use, then we'll know for sure that we don't have any excuses left. Hmm, maybe that's not a good thing.
