This has to be one of my all time favourites.
Shot Jackson and Buddy E. recorded this and
also Jerry Byrd. I listened to both arrangements
for a long time and they always stayed in my mind.
Without trying to imitate I present my arrangement
of the instrumental as inspired by the great ones.
There are a lot of pedal sounds in this but it is all
done with the bar on 8 string E13th. tuning.

Beautiful playing on a classic tune. This arrangement makes me want to go home and dig out a steel with E13 tuning tonight. Very Happy

Sounds great, Roy! Great tone! I mentioned on another thread that this song is the one that I sound my best. I just love it! I have heard several arrangements of it over the years by any number of players both Dobro and non-pedal and have never heard one I didn't like!

Hi Roy. As they say in Nova Scotia, that picking was "some nice"!!!! It's a very nifty and haunting remdition.

Sorry, I didn't get to see you when I was in Halifax a couple of weeks back. Fred Isenor had a great jam for me at his place in Lantz, with Carl D., Wilf, Murray, Peter Trenholme, Rev Roy and Michael K. from Newfoundland. A good time was had by all. In fact, it was so enjoyable, I'm planning on doing it all over again next year, only there won't be any high school reunion, strictly music!!!

Keep up the nice picking.

Geo

Jack, I would like try the video idea but
the hardware and "knowhow" are the stumble
blocks.
George, glad to hear you had an enjoyable time in
our Province.

Truly enjoyed this contribution.

If it's not a secret, what affects, guitar and amp are you using. Sorta like in a photography magazine.
I used to wonder why these crazy photographers were always noting what film, F-stop, lense and camera they were using.

It helps to know these things as we appreciate another person's artistry.

Ray,
The guitar on the above clip was Gibson D8
Consolete. No amp. Direct to Roland Digital recorder.

Anybody remember old Deacon Brumfields dobro solo of "I'll Be All Smiles Tonite" on New River records from W.W.V.A. back in late 50s , early 60s ?? His dobro version was one of the best !! IMHO !! Does anybody else recall Deacon and that song ??? I think Lee Moore used to play it late at nite !! Eddie "C" ( the old geezer )

I guess everyone knows that on that session with Buddy released on Starday, Shot was playing his PedalBro. This one, the second that he made, had two pedals and was a console model.

He is also playing, on the first four notes, point-counter point (one tone going up and the other was going down at the same time).

It was one of Shot's favortie songs and he played it on later sessions with this normal 7-string ShoBro but without the point-counter point intro.

Eddie, I sure remember the Deacon! I bought a Dobro from him once. I glad you mentioned that version! It's one of my favorites also. The trill he did on that cut was just great! I always try and include some of the Deacon anytime I play that tune! He was one of the best of old time Dobro players!! Smile
