Well, I'm going to La Belle France for one gig this week, the Equiblues Festival in Saint Agreve (?). I'll be with Gary P. Nunn and the Sons of the Bunkhouse, as usual. Any other Forumites going to be in attendance?

Sure is a long trip for one gig, but that's the music bidness. Wink

Be careful and enjoy France. Eat the fish, I hear they eat lots of horsemeat over there, you know how us Texans feel about our horses...Joe Rouse

The wine is good, but don't drink the water. Wink

Also, they sell some really good aspirin that fizzes like Alka-Seltzer -- great remedy for what happens when you drink wine instead of water. Laughing

I played that festival a couple of years ago.
All I can say is I wish I was going with ya.

It's an absolute beautiful little village with the friendliest people I've ever met.
If you like great food and wine, they have an unlimited supply for you.
Even the green room is stocked with great wine.

All I can say is, 'Zut alors!'*

*No, I mean really. After 4 years of high school French, that's all I can say.

Hey Herb,
I just got back from Denmark from a one day show with Connie Smith, yes it's a long way over the pond. NW Air decided my guitar needed a extra day in Amsterdam. I filled out all the lost luggage forms and my guitar did show up the next day. It took about nine hour to fly back across the Atlantic and the flight was full. Here wishing you a safe trip.

Joe from Texas:
If horses weren't intended to be eaten, then why are they made of meat?

Herb, my friend:
Have a great time in France. See you in St. Louis. Show 'em how western swing is supposed to be played.

Reply to Roy,
Same reason people don't eat dogs, cats, and some other wild or domestic animals. In Texas we admire our horses most of the time, and sometimes we curse them when we end up sitting on a bit of earth when we should be riding.
Most of us that were born and lived in Texas many years knew that. Some people don't feel the same and I respect their opinions. I even heard of a good guy who thought so much of his horse that after the great animal passed away he had the carcass mounted and it the horse is still on display. Matter of how you were raised and taught...Have fun Herb...Joe Rouse

Joe,

I lived in Garland, Texas for 10 years and had four horses at that time. My daughter always competed in barrel races at the rodeos and we were rodeo fans. I learned that the thinking of many Texans was that they had a lot of beautiful horses and fast women. I wouldn't really eat a horse, but some people were said to have inadvertently done so in Southern California during WWII; a "Big Boy" restaurant there was rumored to have been closed by the health department for using horse meat in their hamburgers. I don't think they would have dared do that in Texas.

Roy Rogers had both his horse, Trigger, and his dog, Bullet, stuffed. The standard joke around at that time was that we all hoped Dale didn't die before Roy.

among the Plain Indians, it was only in time of hardship & famine that they ate their ponies

Horse meat was popular in France, probably cause of Napoleon & WWI
nowadays, there are very few horse butcher shops left here

Trigger, Bullet, both stuffed. I guess thats when Dale started staying awake and watching the PTL show.
Think Brother Herb will be alright in France? I've offered twice to go with him.

Yeah, Joe. The Herbster can stand up to any of them. Those 1" steel tone bars are better than a roll of nickles when making a killer fist.

BTW, thanks for the email.

Not to worry, Joe -- the festival grounds are safe, nice little cottages for dressing rooms, etc. Maybe they still had the big monitor screens on either side of the stage and the crowd was occasionally able to see Herb's 20-foot-tall hands doing their magic in living color.

The time to worry is when the pickers leave the festival grounds and go into town...especially if they're loud, drunk, and still wearing their hats...I think the statute of limitations is up this coming year so I could go back if I had to...
