I had windows XP for years, then out of the blue for I don`t know what reason I decided to try Mac and bought a nice Mac OS X for about $600.00,it was a demo model. After spending some time getting used to it I forgot all about all the problems I used to have with my Windows.I got a reminder now when I purchased lap top with Windows Vista on it.This thing is driving me crazy, it is slow, crashes all the time and not to even mention all kinds of viruses.Windows users,do yourself a favor and try Apple, after you get used to it you will love it,trust me.Windows sucks.

DB, I disagree, except for the virus protection required for Windows. I have had XP running on both my computers, and never had a disastrous software failure. Now 98 was a different animal. Maybe I'm just lucky. I like Macs too, but can"t justify the price difference. JP

I am also a Windows XP user, but I don't run as an Administrator, rather as a Power User (less privileged). While this limits the functions I can perform from that account it also insulates me from viruses, spyware and other malware, none of which can be installed with less than full Administrator privileges. I am still able to update many programs and do most of the things everybody does with their computers and I know how to use the Run As command to perform installations or uninstalls as an Administrator, when necessary.

I have written about this on my website in these articles:
Windows 2000 and XP User Account Privileges Explained
Limited User Privileges Protect Against Malware Infections

well,I paid $600 for new Mac OS X (demo model) with full warranty wich is ok price I guess, nothing out of this world,of course there was Mac`s with up to $6K price tag but those are for serious artists.I have no problems with viruses, runs fast and doesn`t crash like Microsoft products.I`m saying Mac is way better but if someone can`t afford it, that`s not what I was talking about. You get what you pay for, right?

I began my computer life on Windows and started using Macs a few years later when I got into graphic design, and I would not go back. I only use Windows when I have to now.

Apple doesn't make an entry level machine that competes with Dell or Gateway; you can't get a new Mac for $500, and that's because even the cheapest Mac does everything right out of the box - graphics, video, sound, etc, and you have to spend some extra $ to get a $500 Dell to do all that.

If you compare a similarly configured Dell or Gateway, especially the high-end models, with a Mac you might find the Mac to be cheaper.

I've been running Vista on one of my PC's since it was released. I've had NO problems and almost no "learning curve" problems migrating to Vista. My PC Runs better and faster.

The PC VS Mac issue will be around as long as both are built.

However, the latest figure I saw, last week, was that 93% of the PC's are using Microsoft Operating Systems. 7% for the rest, including Mac's, Linux, etc.

I've got both here in front of me now. Both twin core, the Max on OSX and the PC on XP.
Occasionally either one will crash, mostly both run well and lightning fast compared with the computers i started with (remember Z80 and 6502?).
The only real advantages of the Mac are much faster bootup and shutdown times, and a much prettier display.
The PC is my recording rig, and the Mac is on the Internet for all the reasons Damir mentions.
Cheers
Dave

I switched to Mac about 5 years ago and never looked back.

I was happy to leave the world of cryptic error messages (this computer has performed an illegal operation......anyone remember that?) behind.

I hope this dosent turn into a Mac vs PC war.......we've heard it all before and it's a real yawnfest.

All our machines are PC's because of the large investment in Windoze/Intel based software some of which will never be ported to the Mac OS. (Think CAD/CAM and 3D.)

Having said that, I am seriously looking at an Intel Mac purchase this year since I can now use almost all of that software. (Mach, a CNC controller, may not work properly.) This would allow me to get rid of Adobe's Premiere Pro and get the easier-to-use Apple Final Cut Pro.

Remember that you can also run windoze on Intel Macs, using Bootcamp whcih requires a reboot or Paralells whcih allows you to run both at the same time.

I havent used either one, as I dont use any windows programs, but I've heard good things.

I have Parallels Desktop installed on an Intel Mac at work. It runs a virtual Windows computer in a Mac window. Windows can see the Mac hard disk, so you can share files across the two systems.

I use WinXP daily, and, for some inexplicable reason, I don't seem to have to deal with those "windows bugs". Wonder why?

Good Point, Dave. Except for the occasional Shockwave bug (and that's not Microsoft's fault) I don't have any problems with my Windows machine (I'm using Vista Home Premium).

well,I don`t know about you guys but when I was using my XP I had to constantly keep updating my antivirus programs and was attaced all the time,I had to watch and think before opening every email..all of those problems that I don`t have with my Mac.End even while I`m typing this my screen is turning black and then my emoticons start flashing like crazy, half of my screen is black. Not to mention rebooting this thing that takes forever.Yesterday I tried to check my email before I went to work and after 20 minutes wait for explorer to reboot I finaly closed the lap top and went to work. This may be just my bad luck with Windows,it`s possible that nobody else has any problems and that their Windows programs are working great.Right now I have to go ahead and try to reboot this POS again, just hope I wont have to retype all this stuff all over again.

Damir, I don't know what kind of machine or hardware you have but there are obvious problems with it. Whether it's hardware, software or both???

I don't have much spyware/virus, etc issues. I keep my security software up to date (and you need to do that on ANY PC, not just the ones running Microsoft OS). I have Mailwasher Pro that I use in conjunction with my e-mail and that keeps everyting I don't want out of my system. I don't visit a lot of "Qustionable" sites and that also minimizes potential problems.

Being a PC tech probably does more than anything to help me keep a "healthy" PC.

I concur with everything Jack listed, plus I run with reduced user privileges, which makes it virtually impossible for most known viruses, adware, keyloggers, or spyware components to install in the first place. In my opinion this is the best protection with the least inconvenience to me, but I am versed in using the Run As command when needed and don't mind switching to an administrator level account to do maintenance or to uninstall programs requiring admin privileges.

Combining good security practices with good security software, plus a hardware firewall and reduced user privileges makes for a very safe PC online experience.

I have provided links in a previous post in this thread to my webpages explaining how XP computers can be run with reduced user privileges and how this protects your computer from malware installations. Windows Vista users do this by default now, unless they refuse to setup the limited user account, or deactivate the security popup warnings it provides when a program tries to do something requiring administrator rights.

I find it quite interesting that this "poll" shows three times as many Windows users as Mac users. Aren't we Windows users smart enough to know Mac is the better alternative? Rolling Eyes Or might there be another explanation? Whoa!

Damir, that computer has some serious problems which need the attention of someone who knows what they're doing to get them corrected. That's not how Windows behaves, unless it's corrupted or damaged.

It's unclear why it would ever become necessary to "reboot" just to check email, but it's things like forced shutdowns, etc, that can further exacerbate the problems the system already has.

I think it has less to do with luck, and more to do with good operating practices, such as those others in this thread have suggested.

Hmmmm.....you would think people who drove a Dodge would be smart enough to know that a Rolls Royce is the better alternative.

I wonder what this poll would look like if you took it among, oh lets say audio engineers, digital photographers or video editors?

Some of the windows users here sound like theyre speaking a foreign language.

"user privelage, security software, hardware firewall, spyware, virus, shockwave bug, service pack, homepremiumbasicprofessionalultimate version 7.8343, whatever"

I dont need to do any of those things to enjoy my computer. I visit any website I want to, open any attachment I want to, dont need to install anything to make my user experience an enjoyable one. I can do a thousand forced shutdowns in a row and never affect a single thing.

The whole mac vs pc war is a tired one, and I have yet to hear anything new.

My studio machine for the last 3-4 years has been a Windows XP Pro PC, it runs nice and smooth and hasn't crashed once in those years.

I have considered Mac as Internet machine for security reasons, but haven't been able to justify the cost as long as my current Internet/office PC still breaths..
