Hi,

The wife and I are off to Honolulu 11/14-21. Very exciting!

I would be most grateful for any info on who's playing where.

Ron Whitfield, are you there?

Thanks,

Bob

Escaping those brutal north Florida winters, Bob?

I see that y'all get quite a bit colder up your way than we do down here in Pinellas, being further south, and surrounded by water on the peninsula.

Have a great time!

Thanks, Todd. It's our first trip there, so we are very excited.

Part business too: I'm attending the Society for Ethnomusicology conference. Tough duty, but somebody's got to do it.

I'd like to weigh in...I'll be in Honolulu on the 20th (Monday). HGSA doesn't list anyone on Mondays.

Suggestions?

I be here, Bob, soaking up the sweet sunshine on these shores.
I'm sure you'll both enjoy your time in Hawaii.

As always, a good start to get a basic overview of 'who's where' for Hawaiian steel is www.hsga.org

Too bad you weren't at Rosa's in Wahiawa last Sat. night to see Jus' Cousins, a modern version of the great Son's of Hawaii, with Feet Rogers decendant Ron Kanahele on southpaw B6. You just don't find steel played like this guy does it. They may have a gig now in Pearl City and I need that info as well, so I'll try and get it to you.

The best steel in Waikiki is found on Sunday evenings at the Waikiki Marriott, 6:30pm 3rd Fl. pool bar, being played by Bobby Ingano as he backs up Martin Pahinui (son of the legend, Gabby).

Paul Kim is with Mike Kaawa at Honey's at Koolau in Kaneohe, and Eddie Kamae always sits in. Really good, but the place is impossible to find if you don't know.

I'll do my homework and think of whom else would be worth your time.

Craig, on Monday and Tuesday, you can see Jeff Au Hoy play with Hiram Olsen and Ocean Kaowili at The Halekulani hotel just feet from the surf, with beautiful views of Diamond Head/Waikiki beach and a genuine Hawaiian sunset.
They start at 5pm., and ask them to turn up the vol., especcially Jeff, as the staff is always bugging the musicians to turn it down so all you can hear are the people around you.
Get there early to get the choice/musicians table next to the 100+ year old Kiawe tree.
Before the show starts, invite the boys to sit with you at breaks, as that's where they like to cruise.
Hiram was great friends with, and backed Jerry Byrd for decades.

Have fun, guys!

I'll back all that Ron has stated. If you are looking for the "romantic" side of Waikiki, (perhaps renew your honeymoon vows), there is no better place than the Halekulani, ("House Without a Key")...great music, ALWAYS ! ....and always you will hear steel guitar, Monday thru Sunday. The sunset view of Diamond Head is worth millions! The cost? Great bargain...just order a drink and if you frown upon alcohol, order a "Shirley Temple" .. no booze. You'll pay higher prices for your drinks, but that all helps to pay the overhead and give the musicians work. They even have a small dance floor for you and your sweetie to cuddle and coo as you listen to the lovely music. Halekulani Hotel is at the foot of Lewers which has changed dramatically. It's easy to find. Yah, and ask the steel player to turn up the volume....that too, is my only beef.

Hey Ron, thanks for the plug

Mahalo all.

Good news. The Waikiki Marriott is the conference hotel and I'm a big fan of Bobby Ingano.

Will also try to catch Jeff Au Hoy, et al.

Best,

Bob
