Hi everybody, I'm new here. I'm also new to the steel guitar. Been playing 6-string guitar for about 18 years, but a couple of weeks ago decided it was time for a new challenge. I've always loved the sound of the pedal steel, and tried in vain to emulate it in my guitar playing.
I just bought a Carter Starter Friday night, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I played a $3000 Magnum last weekend, and couldn't see that much of a difference between the two, quality wise, besides the Grover tuners.
Right now I'm having some tuning issues with it, but I just went and bought a tuner for the first time in my life, and I'm going to try that. Other than that, I'm pretty stoked and am looking forward to meeting some of the people here and gaining some insight and wisdom on how to get the most out of this thing.

Just practice and play a lot, and don't put decals on the front apron of your guitar.
As Papa Joe said, you'll learn a lot here; I know I have.
Just ask how to do something, and it won't be long until you have a bunch of steel players sharing their experiences and giving you their opinions on how it should be done (many of them different and all of them "right").

I'll bet that after a year on the Starter, you'll see a big difference when you sit behind the Magnum again. But yeah, that Carter Starter is a pretty nice guitar - especially for a beginner.
Find you a teacher nearby or get some of Jeff Newman's stuff before you give up. It can be a pretty daunting adventure if you've never played anything with a bar/pedals before.

| Thanks for the warm welcome all. I'm learning a lot on my own the past couple of days, but I really have to hunt for it. The guitar came with a DVD that gives you a little tutorial on the basics of playing, I'm watching that little by little. |
