I have a chance to purchase a Sho-Bud LDG for $1,750.00 plus freight of about 60 dollars. I have never owned an LDG but always wanted to. I could purchase this tomorrow but before I do I wanted some feedback from some forum members as to the value and if its in as good of shape is it worth the $1,750. It doesn't look in great shape, but average shape. Of course it's a green SD-10 3 x 4, with a good black vinyl full pad that has no cracks. It has a wood lacquered neck, not aluminum. The body is in good shape, not excellent. Not cracks and the body is good. The undercarriage, including the knee levers, etc look good. Bellcranks, cross members, changer, all look good. Nothing rusty, w/ nice blond varnish undercarriage. And if so if I ever decide to resell, could I get my money back on it. I know that I've seen these priced at anywhere fro $1,400.00 to over $2,600.00 and even more for one that is in pristine shape.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP SO I CAN DECIDE IF I SHOULD PURCHASE>
I need to know today sometime. If I don't get any feedback I'll have to make a split decision.

So to sum up, an LDG SD-10 3x4-standard -would you pay this kind of money and expect to get your return back and maybe more if ever sold.

What's the average going rate on one of these in GOOD Shape (not great, but good)??

Waiting anxiously for some feedback.

TXS

Al,

For the most part, the earlier LDGs are usually more sought after. So the year is important as well as the condition. Is it round front or square front? Does it have wide or narrow pedals? Does it have a curved or straight head stock? Straight or curved knee levers?

For a square-front LDG - in good shape - I'd say that's a fair price. If it's a roundfront...grab it fast.

The knee levers are straight aluminum, not the curved. I guess I knew that and forgot to mention. Also pedals are not the wide, they are the narrow.

And its the square, not round.

So this would make it the newer version, not the sought after ones, correct? So it's worth about what I can get it for, correct?

That's good to know. That's for your help guys. You put my mind at ease if I lose out.

Al

It's still worth that. They're like dirt. They ain't makin' any more. I have one of the older and one of the new models. They're both great guitars.I'd say anything under $2000.00 would be a bargain if it's in good playable condition and not beat up.

I found out that I have more time to make up my mind
before I purchase this so I would like more comments on the worth of the ShoBud LDG. newer version square front, narrow pedals and it has the nylon tuners. It is in good shape, not pristine, it has a few scratches and dings, but all in all good shape. Pad is real nice w/ no rips or tears. I would consider this a 7 out of 10.

Please more comments would be helpful to make up my mind on anyone that owns or has owned or knows alot about Shobud LDG's.

I've got a '73 LDG that I bought from fellow forum member Jim Saunders a few years ago. This is the round front, barrels on pullers version. Very light use except for a fading of the green color to more of a light brown. Since then, I've also replaced the non-original dust catcher fretboard to the 'correct' flat one. Here's a pic that Ricky Davis took of it when he had it over at his house, but it was totally playable as I bought it.

I paid Jim about $1250 if I remember right, and I believe he was selling it for someone else, he may see this thread and chime in. Anyway, since that time I've seen LDG prices go through the roof, seems all year models have appreciated, but especially the early ones. I can tell you it would take at least 2K to get me to even consider selling this one, and even then I don't think I would. I happen to like it a lot and it sounds great. The LDGs are also fairly light by ShoBud standards, that's a big plus.

These old ShoBuds don't appeal to everybody, for lots of reasons, but if you DO like them you have to pay the going rate. You're probably not going to get rich on the one you're looking at if you decided to sell it later, but I'd bet you could always get your money out of it, if not a bit more.. These are JMO as an interested observer of ShoBud prices here on the forum over the last few of years.

Like most sellers say, "Don't like the price? Go find another one..." There just aren't that many around.

Hey Bill,

I have 2 roundfront LDGs. 1 has the dust catcher... I asked Ricky about that, and he said that the dust catcher was an option at the time. Apparently, the '73 could come with white, black, or dust catcher.

Al... $1750.00 is not bad for a late model if it is in pretty good shape.

Hi Mike,
I certainly wouldn't doubt Ricky, and I've seen plenty of ShoBuds with mixed up combinations of pedals, etc., but, I think this one was definitely non-original. It was held on by 6 little woodscrews (ouch!!) and when I took it off, it looked liked the original had left a slightly different fade pattern. If you look real close in that pic, you can actually see the little screws at the 1st, 8th, and 23rd frets.

I'm not a big fan of those dust-catcher fretboards anyway, just because they're so bad about er..uh... catching dust.. Smile

Hi Al,
they're really nice. They sound twangy and warm, they look great, they are light, the tuning is stable, 3x4 is enough for most players, and they are collectable. There's no shame in the later models, although a lot of people prefer the round fronts. Some people don't care for the components of the later models, and some people prefer the more modern 3-up/2-down changer of the later models, so I guess it's personal preference or a collector's consideration for the more collectable older version. My first pedal steel was my transitional LDG with the square front, Super Pro mechanics, and curved tuning head. I have been playing this guitar regularly for about five years, and never have had any problems with it, no problems with the chromed pot-metal parts as some people will warn you about. This guitar is a work horse, plus it's so purdy that my wife got really upset the one time I thought about selling it to buy a different guitar: now, that in itself should be bonus for these beauties!
Here are some pictures of mine:

Good luck!

Well if you have'nt played one; than it's hard to hear the difference. There is a difference between the sound of the early round front; barrel tuning LDG's than all the others.
I can raise or lower a string as many times as I want on a single/single changer fingers.
Here's mine:
