I have a 24 inch scale lap steel that I want to install 2 humbuckers in for a wide range of tone options. Is there a rule of thumb as to the optimum distance between the pickups? I've also heard that the neck pickup should be under the 24th fret but I don't know if that's a hard and fast rule.

I don't know the answer to that but,it reminded me of something I read somewhere.
Seems this guy had a Tele and said the neck pup being directly under where the 24th fret would be caused a neg.reaction.
He removed the pup completly to solve the problem.Dunno, too deep for me. Laughing
We should hear some good opinions on this thread. PJ

I centered the pickups 4 5/8" from the bridge. I don't remember where I got that from, but it works well for me.

Thanks chas - I'll most likely put it as close to the end of my fretboard as I can get it. I think I measured about 4 inches so that's pretty similar to what you suggested.
