I shipped a big body steel guitar to a guy and the price has sky rocketed sense January.
I guess because of fuel cost.
$120.22 from Texas to New York.
I must be packing with to much padding, either that or I need to switch to dulcimers or juice harps.
Anyone else got any gripes about the shipping cost of a steel guitar. |

Yesterday I shipped a Carter Starter from NC to CT via FedEx ground, and the total was $15. I thought it was going to be much higher, based on what the USPS prices have been lately. I'm not sure if the difference is that much on smaller items, but on heavier things I'd definitely check out FedEx prices first. |

It must be all of the padding I put in the package.
I have been known to go overboard sometimes.
Just ask my old lady, she said if I built a house I would go broke buying nails. |

Stu,
That is about par for your neck of the woods I would think. Man that's almost 20 miles.
It is a shame to have to live in a beautiful place like Alaska and have to be punished for it by having to pay for it. |

I ship small items from my local hardware store who uses a Package Express setup, as we have no UPS terminal in my town. They charge an extra handling fee and more than the standard $0.35 per $100 for insurance. For small packages they are about 30% higher than the online UPS calculator estimates.
I ship large items like guitars and amps from work. These rates are dirt cheap, much less than the online UPS or ebay shipping estimators. I shipped my Sho-Bud Pro II in a heavy road case surrounded by construction foam and 2 layers of cardboard from PA to CA for $72 with $2400 of insurance.

That is what the deal is.
If you go to one of the mail box places they kill ya'.
I don't have any place else to go.
I spent $70.00 getting the stuff to pack it with.
It looks like a 6 year old kid packed it, because of all of the padding I did.
Like I was saying, maybe I go overboard. |

I just received a Fender 1000 from Massachusetts, in two heavy boxes via UPS Ground. Cost was $60. I thought that was pretty reasonable.
On the other hand, the recent USPS increase for small First Class packages has been killing us. On one CD or a set of strings, the price jumped by more than 50%. It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

The Post Office has really done a number, we ship small, very light weight packages of hearing aids from our hearing aid repair company, The cost went from 63cents to $1.47 also if you ship a small envelope thats thicker than 1/4 inch, It went from 39cents to $1.30, I haven't shipped any steels or amps lately, but found that Fedex Ground was by far the cheapest! Usually between $20 & $30 including insurance, Good Luck to all! except the Post Office! au |

Here is a little tip i have learned from shipping gear all over the US ( yea i trade gear a lot! )
but if you ship from one business ( my local Mom & Pop shippers ) to another business ( another Mom & Pop shipper ) on the other end it is quite a bit cheaper than shipping from 1 residence to another for what that is worth..Ron _________________ "Tone is in the hands. I take the guitars that I ship to a local UPost for one reason only- insurance. They wrap the guitar cases in bubble wrap surrounded by the dreaded foam "peanuts"- (what a mess to unpack)- and then handle the insurance. While there are times that the package arrives pretty banged up I have never once had a problem with the guitar being damaged. The last guitar I shipped to the East coast was $163.00 (ouch). While I could have done it myself for 1/2 of that, if there was a problem it would have been due to my packing (one of the questions that is asked on the UPS form is - "Who packed the shipment?")- regardless of the true reason (ie.- UPS throwing it from the truck to the ground). This way it is between the shipper and the carrier- not me. |
